Two Year Old & Daycare Troubles

My 2yo (almost 3) has had to start daycare due to my husband taking a job halfway across the country & me having to stay behind with older DS who is a HS junior and to make arrangements to sell the house, etc.  Prior to all of this my DH had a schedule that allowed him to be home most of the time while I was working & LO stayed with one of his grandmas when we were both working.  Full-time with him is too much for either of them.  I found an in-home provider who would take him 3 days a week while the grandmas still each get one day a week.  We started this week.

Monday went fairly well.  Wednesday he kept asking her to go get Mama and screamed and cried at naptime.  Today I was called a little over an hour after I dropped him off because he had screamed & cried since I left.  He was standing in the backyard in the play area just crying.  Nothing would comfort him except me picking him up.  My mom took him for the rest of the day since I could not leave work.  He did preschool 2 mornings a week last year & it took weeks to get him to stay at it.  I do not have the time off from work to be able to go and spend the day for several days at day care & I don't want to keep paying for it to have to keep picking him up after an hour and shuffle him off elsewhere.

We are going to switch from a MWF schedule to a Weds, Thurs, Fri schedule week after next to get him in a routine of going three days in a row.

Do you think moving him to a daycare center (even if we have to go full-time) where there are more workers and maybe someone would have time to work 1 on 1 with him would work.

He also is like this about church - it took months of work to get him to go to nursery for 2 hours on Sunday mornings.  They have had promotions and he should have moved up but he cries every time anyone tries to take him in that room - he had rather stay back and they are fine with it right now as long as he is not too rough with the younger ones he is now in the room with.

Thanks for reading and sorry it is so fragmented.  I am at a loss at how to deal with this.

Re: Two Year Old & Daycare Troubles

  • Our center says any kid that starts after 18 months has a harder time adjusting but it will happen if the parents don't give in. They don't call unless they are sick or hurt. I don't know what your home provider setting is like but I can assure you DS wouldn't get 1 on 1 care or attention in our center when they have 12-18 kids per room .... Not sure that will be beneficial but they do adjust it just takes time.

This is exactly what I was going to say.  They get LESS individualized attention at a center.  At that age group at our center there are 2 providers for something like 9 kids.  It seems like he needs time to settle in and I think having him go 3 days in a row might help rather than a one day here, one day there thing.

  • Well he was kicked out of the home daycare.  Not a bad thing- she was licensed to have 9 kids between the ages of 2-5 by herself.  I did not think that through well enough.  She told me that he was upsetting the other kids & parents with his distress, crying, etc.

I am going to visit a center today that has a part time slot.  The administrators told me that they help fill in for classrooms with new students to help them adjust.  The two teachers are still in the room but they come in as an extra person instead of as a substitute.

I am hoping for 3 days in a row.
