Diapers.. anyone in "4s" yet?

our size 3 pampers are starting to seem small, and our DC provider (my SIL) who has three little boys of her own thinks he needs to move up soon!!!

He weighs about 21 lbs, and the 3s say up to 28lbs?  is that more for tall skinny 28lb babies, not stocky chunkers?

anyone else in 4s yet?

Lord no, we are still in 2s. But when we moved up to 2s they seemed small immediately and I was concerned we needed to go up in size. But he was only 15 - 16 lbs at the time and 2s go up to 18. So I stuck with 2s and then realized that as he gets bigger/fatter the diaper just fits differently than it used to when he was first born, but the size is actually correct.

The tape tabs don't meet in the middle, but he is totally covered and I can fit two fingers in easily enough. I figure that's a good rule since that's what we use with the car seat ;)
This, exactly.  Our most recent value size box of 2's (we use pampers swaddlers), had a handful of 3's inside.  I feel like O is quite some time from needing the huge 3's.  He is a preemie though, catching up fast in weight and HC, but still low on the length scale.

  • We have a chunkster and are still in 3s.  Our daycare lady always seems to tell us when we should go to the next size. It kinda makes me mad.. Both times we finished up what we had opened before going up.  I think once they start having major blow outs all the time is when they are ready.  I feel like we will soon be in 4s too which I just find crazy.  LOL
  • I think we are going to need to soon. The 3's go up to 28 but the 4s start at 22. There's always overlap. Right when we get into (or near) the overlapping weight, we need to move up. LO is 19 pounds.

We are also in the process of trying new brands - every time he poops, we have a blowout - day or night. I'm hoping we have better luck with Huggies/ Costco. For what it's worth, we have a chunker (90th percentile for weight, only 70 something for height.)

  • Wow! My 23 month old just switched from 4s to 5s a few months ago. DS2 is nowhere near 3s. But my boys run long and lean so I usually switch them at the bottom of the weight guideline bc the other diapers start to get short.

DS1 was close to 36 inches tall when we switched him to 5s from 4s if that gives you an idea of how big 4s are. That being said 4s seemed a lot bigger than 3s. We did a lot of brand switching at that point.

Pampers/Luvs run smallest, Huggies are in the middle, and Fisher Price/Target run bigger. Fisher price are nice in that the tabs will tell you when it's time to move up.

  • good to know about the overlap in sizes, I forgot about that, so if 4s start at 22lbs he should be ready soon.

I feel like the 3s are no longer adequately covering his butt

  • My post has nothing to do with diapers. But for the record, we are in 2's and sliding into 3's once this box is done.

I would just like to say that I'm happy to see some babies here with some weight on them. I was reading another post up the board about BFing and I was a bit worried b/c those weights were 12, 13, maybe 14lbs. DS weighed in at 17lbs 1oz at his appt yesterday. I almost thought I was doing something wrong.

    :P
You're all good... I thought LO had lost too much weight when he got sick about a month ago. He was starting to lose some of his chub. His 4 month appt was shortly afterwards, and he was in the 90th percentile for weight. Um... yeah... and I thought he was getting too skinny. ha! :)

  • My DS weighs 19 lbs and has been in 4s for about a 2 weeks. He's long,so he's usually out of diapers before he hits the bottom of the next size recommendation, and never sees the top of it.

@2010Bride2Be - I saw that too and was a little surprised.  My LO weighed just over 14 pounds at his 4 month appt, but he was 4.2 at birth due to IUGR and being premature.  He's doing great on the percentiles considering where he started.

No, but what is the starting # for 4?  My first son moved up (due to leaking) every size when he was 2# under the starting # for the next size.  So if 3's were for 18-?? he moved in at 16.  C just moved into 3's at 16 lbs too.  If he's too big for 3's, he's too big!  Move on up.
I also found the same thing to be true with my DS. He starts the next size 2 lbs ahead of time. We just moved to 3s a couple of weeks ago and he's 16 lbs. We use pampers swaddlers. I'm thinking about trying Huggies because he's been having more blowouts lately, especially when lying down on his back.

Wow, we are still in size 1's! About ready to move up to 2's, though. She just turned 4 months and is 12 lbs.

  • We are in 2s and she will be 4 months on Friday
  • We moved to 3's about a month ago, LO weighs 15 lbs as of Monday, so we didn't go by the weight on the package. He kept blowing out of the 2's, and now since he's been in the 3's we haven't had a problem. I plan to do the same for the 4's.
  • We are still in size 1 they still fit fine but I am going to buy size 2 when this case runs out. (Which will be awhile we just bought it)

  • 4's?! My 2 YEAR old is in 5's lol my LO is still in 1's though we will move to 2's after this box.

  • We are in 2s. He is 4.5 mos. I think he's about 15.5 lbs but we will see. He is long and lean. I wish he had a bit more weight. I EBF on demand and he gets oatmeal but he never stops moving!

3 weeks early at 7lb 9 oz. He was pushing 24 lbs at his 4 month, he'll be 5 months tomorrow. Almost outgrown his 18 month clothes, we're in 24 month bodysuits and 2-4t shirts. Pants are a different story, because he's only 27.5". It's his girth that makes him go up in sizes, he has a very chunky body especially thighs. I'm sure we'll have to fold the 5 diapers a little, but the tape sides and legs are getting tight on his 4's. Keep BF'ing your LO and don't worry about the weight!
