Should I have been a b*#%^?

So today go into subway and have my sub started and of course they also start the sub of the guy behind me. It is then that I notice him handle the lunch meat and go on to my sub without changing gloves. Now I know everything should be ok and no problems, but the thought did cross my mind of "excuse me can you put on different gloves because u just touched lunch meat". But I couldn't come up with a way without being a total bitch. But the question is should I have been? I just don't like being that person who is high maintenance, I deal with enough of them at work.

  • Yeah just a thought went in my head of what if there is listeria all over that meat!!

  • Well you have a right to request that but tbh it does come across as high maintenance to me. If you're very concerned about cross-contamination wouldn't it be easier to prepare your own food? Not being snarky, just thinking that may ease your concerns. You never know what went on while you weren't watching. (Personally, not a concern of mine when my mouth is watering for a sub, but to each his own)

  • Yeah I'm usually not the super high maintenance food orderer so that's why I didn't want to say anything. I just got done working a very busy ten hour day so self food prep was not on the table tonight.

  • I wouldn't have said anything. I also would have ordered a cold sub with lunch meat so that's probably why.

  • I think you sound mega sweet about it but its highly unlikely listeria would even be on the meat let alone be transferred via the gloves. It's just as much a possibility some vegetables on your sub have listeria ... So I wouldn't get worked up over anything like that. You definitely don't sound like a bitch though so even if you did say something I'm sure they wouldn't have thought you were one :)
  • I wouldn't have said anything personally, but I don't think anyone would've given it too much thought if you had asked. I work in fast food and if someone asked the kitchen to change gloves before making their food (whether for an allergy or something like this) I would've just told them to do it.

  • Coming from someone who worked at subway for years in high school --- the same gloves are used for an entire sandwich each time -- so they touch the meat, the cheese, and the veggies. So, even if you did ask them to change gloves (totally your right, not necessarily a bit thing to do) previous "meat" gloves have already touched your cheese and veggies.

  • I think you're over-thinking this one. Try not to worry :)

  • My doctor told me to not eat anything at Subway because of the cross contamination.
  • I have learned to speak up, I have a daughter with allergies so we have to be very careful with those types of things....I usually start off letting them know about the allergies and they always go out of their way to make things right!

  • I'm a microbiologist and I think you are fine.  The deli meats would have to be swimming in bacteria in order to transfer enough to give you an infectious dose i think.

  • Is this because you're worried about listeria or because you're a vegetarian? My cousin is a vegetarian and doesn't worry about that kind of stuff. If you're worried about listeria I can't imagine contamination happening because the subway guy used the same gloves. I think the last listeria cases had to do with contaminated cantaloupe and not lunch meat anyhow. Also, I would be irritated from an environmental aspect if the workers had to change gloves for each individual sandwich...that's A LOT of waste. Unless they're going between the register and the food I don't see a need for it.
