April 2014 Moms

Is this possible?

Hi there!

This might seem like a strange question/questions, is it possible to miss the fact that your are having twins on the initial ultra sound? I have only gained 2lbs, but I definitely have a bump. My belly button is also looking really shallow and stretched out. My mom even mentioned my "bump" when we went out to dinner, she immediately started to think I was having twins.

Also, for RH negative moms out there who had their RHogam shot already. I stopped spotting after my shot and now I started spotting again this evening. I am not cramping and the amount of blood is small. Do you think this is a cause for concern or just something weird that is happening? The L&D nurse that gave me my shot said some women bleed throughout their pregnancy, but I am just really weirded out by the whole blood thing. It was such a challenge for us to get pregnant, I am really hoping for the best, as I know any mom would challenge or not.

Any advice or thoughts anyone has would be appreciated!

Have a great night.

Re: Is this possible?

  • I guess it's possible for the ultrasound tech to miss a twin but I think chances are slim. It's most likely bloat which can really make your bump big! If it comes and goes throughout the day or worse at night than in the morning etc than its bloat. As far as rhogam shot goes, my last pregnancy I had one around 10 weeks (wasn't spotting and never did) and then again at 28 weeks I think. Baby turned out to have my blood type. I think light spotting is normal throughout pregnancy but I'd call your doctor if it seems like a lot or you're cramping too. Good luck!

  • i wouldn't think belly size in the first trimester has any reliable prediction value in whether or not you're having multiples.  a friend of mine is 6 weeks further than me with her third child, and our bellies are the same size.  we were the same basic body shape pre-preg too.  bodies just sprout bumps at different speeds.

in this day and age, i doubt a trained ultrasound tech would entirely miss a second sac and fetus.
  • Not sure! On my transvaginal ultrasound, it was really obvious.  I didn't know what I was even looking at but I saw two sacs before the doctor even pointed it out, and I was at 6w5d.  I'll attach a picture so you can see what mine looked like.

  • Thank you ladies! I am one of the first in my group of friends to get pregnant and I feel like I have no idea what's normal!
  • Same boat!  When is your next u/s appt??

  • I'm sure it's possible but unlikely, and like someone else said I don't think your size this early in pregnancy is much of an indicator at all for how many babies are in there.  More likely how strong your abdominal muscles are.

  • I was thinking the same thing the other day. I had a dream we were having twins and my bump is way bigger than what I had with DD. Maybe I'm just secretly hoping we are having twins.

  • Oh and when I went to the u/s, I saw what looked like two sacs but I could totally be wrong and just super hopeful.
