Blood and mucous in poop?

Hi ladies, my son has been exhibiting blood and mucous (healthy amounts) in his poop for a few weeks now. He's also extra fussy while eating (I EBF). Long story short, we've been back and forth to the pedi a number of times and saw a pediatric gastroenterologist last week, none of whom can give us concrete answers for why this is happening. The doc wants me to pump for a week while "trying" him on Nutramigen to see if it helps. Of course I am willing to try anything to make him feel better, but hate the thought of me making him sick. :( I have been dairy free for two weeks, FYI. Has anyone else gone through something similar??

Re: Blood and mucous in poop?

  • My guy had little spots of blood in his stool when I was taking probiotics everyday.   The day after I stopped taking them his poops were normal again.  I know only take them every 2-3 days and he has been fine since.

Not sure if you are taking probiotics or not but that was the case for us.

  • I read that it can take 2 weeks for dairy to clear your system. Are you avoiding soy too? I think kellymom says dairy & soy intolerances go together. Also hidden dairy is tricky. That was the hardest to avoid for me.

  • I'm dairy free and soy free and this is STILL happening to us.  I tried him on probiotics and he got worse.  I don't know wtf is going on.  I'm going to talk to the pedi at our 4 month in 2 weeks and see if there's an answer...
  • botanicalbliss - us too. I'm on culturelle, and he's on Biogaia drops. I don't feel like either is working, and like you said, it might even be worse. I'd love to know what your pedi says.

theresaw7 - I don't eat much soy. But I do agree that while I've tried to be careful the hidden dairy is tough too. :/
  • When she was on biogaia she had very mucousy poops

DD had the same problem. Had to switch to Nutramigen. It changed our lives, for the better.

    Good luck.

  • My DD had the same thing. You have to eliminate absolutely all dairy AND soy, even the hidden ones. Basically become a label reading nazi. I did this and was able to BF for 16 mos. It is really hard but the good news is you get super skinny from the no dairy and it's worth it to be able to continue to BF.

  • Omg my LO has had this and when I asked the pedi she said if it happened once its ok, but I happened again today but of course it being Sunday she is closed so I am definitely going to call tomorrow. Did it happen with each poop? Once in awhile and how much blood? My LO only has small traces and not every time she goes.

This. For me, I can tell the instant I've had traces of dairy- lots of fussiness and different looking diapers.
The pp is right- you will lose weight :)

  • My baby has mucousy poop but only has tiny specs of blood in her diaper like once a month. We think it might be a minor milk protein intolerance. I'm asking at our 4 month appointment and seeing if I should cut our dairy. She isn't exhibiting any fussy behaviors or anything when she feeds.
