Cloth Diapering

HE washing tips?

If you have a HE machine, what soap do you use? Also, what does your wash routine look like?

I usually do a cold wash with no detergent, followed by a hot wash with an extra rinse using Charlie's soap. I'm curious if I'll have to change it once we get the new machine.

TIA!

Re: HE washing tips?

  • I have a HE top loader.  I alternate using Tide and Rocking Green.  I do a cold rinse followed by a quick wash on heavy soil with no spin.  Then I do a hot wash with an extra rinse.  The second step adds more water weight to the diapers.  I don't know if I could skip it, but since I haven't had any problems in the four months of CDing I'm sticking with it.

  • I have a Kenmore Elite HE FL. Here's my wash routine that I've found works best:
    • rinse, drain, spin on warm (this has 2 rinses)
    • delicates/handwash cycle warm/warm with the spin turned off (it only turns of the final spin after the rinses, this adds weight)
    • "Whitest Whites" cycle w/ 1-2 TBS of Charlie's Soap and 1 scoop Charlie's Booster. This is a pre programmed cycle on my machine. It's a heavy duty hot wash with 2 cold rinses.
This is what I've found to work best for not on my HE machine, but my mothers as well. It's a lot of going to the machine and fiddling, but I have no more ammonia issues like before. GL!

  • i rinse out our inserts before tossing into a wet bag, i wash every other day.

i use a laundry soap that i put together myself, from a list i found online that said it was cloth diaper safe.

so as for actually washing, i put them in for a rinse/spin cycle, that is 20 mins long, then i put it on again without a spin, this is warm/cold, without the spin it is only 8 mins. then i put it on a normal cycle with an extra rinse, and that is on warm cold. that cycle is about 71 mins long.

according to the instructions i got with her diapers (they are smart snugs, that are bamboo) it said that bamboo did not like hot water nor hot air, thus the warm/cold cycles. i found out before i added the rinse/spin, and the second rinse cycles that there was a build of of ammonia, i couldn't smell it due to the charcoal with the bamboo. but she got a rash with blisters. so i added the extra rinse cycles.

  • I do basically the same thing with my HE. Cold rinse, no detergent. Then Heavy Duty cycle on hot with extra rinse. I also use Charlie's soap. I've only been CDing for 2 months, but it's been working great so far.

  • I have an LG front loader.  Speed wash on tap cold, no detergent; Heavy duty wash on hot with All Free and Clear Military; Speed wash on tap cold, no detergent.  I could do an extra rinse after the hot wash but I feel the All creates a lot of suds and I want to make sure it all rinses out.
  • Thanks, ladies! I'll play around with it, but it's good to have some advice. Have a great night!

  • I have the Whirlpool Duet HE washer. I do a cold rinse, then "quick wash" with the slowest spin (to make the load heavier so I get more water in next cycle) with one scoop of Charlies, then "whitest whites" wash, which is hot wash with extra rinse with two scoops of Charlies and one scoop of Charlie's hard water booster.
