BLW first meal(s)?

I am counting the days until baby G can enjoy her first BLW meal (13 days!!).

We are going to start with breakfast and I'd love to do avocado, but I know it's hard to handle. I was think of mashing some up and spreading on toast sticks, but I'm wary of trying grains so early, thoughts? Also, if I try toast, is whole wheat okay? From what I understand, with BLW there is really no reason to NOT try foods (besides the obv: honey). But I'm wondering if we should start out on a baby paleo-type diet and stick to meats, fruits, fats and veg.

Okay, now I'm rambling a bit.

So! BLWers- how did you start out?

Re: BLW first meal(s)?

  • We started with avocado and sweet potatoes.  We bake sweet potato (and lots of other veggie) fries in the oven.  The stick shape is easy for LO to grab onto and gnaw on the end of.  E also did really well with steamed baby carrots for the same reason.
I guess E didn't have much in the way of grains at first.  She gets them now at school, but we don't usually eat them so she didn't either.  We were dairy free also because of her intolerance.  So she was a Paleo baby.  We still eat paleo at home, but she eats what the school provides.

  • We started with ripe fruits mostly, in thin slices.  M was, and still is, a huge fan of peach slices and mango strips.

We didn't do grains for the first 2 wks. We stuck with fruits and veggies.

  • We started this weekend and I guess we jumped right in :) she has had cantaloupe, banana, chicken, pork, scrambled eggs, zucchini bread and green beans. When I say 'had' I means she picks things up, tries to get it to her mouth, mushes it around and then sucks everything off her fingers :)

I must say, it's a huge mess every meal whether M is into it or not.  His hands and fingers are all over the place - on his face, in his hair, in his ears, down his legs & feet, all over the high chair.  And he's great at throwing foods on the floor (not just when he's done, but also foods he deemed inedible).  DH & I are down on our all 4s every single day wiping the floors. (DH cleans up B/D, I clean up L).  We also have 3 smocks in rotation as we have to wash the smock after each meal.

That's the best thing about our dogs - built in clean up crew!  We just dump the high chair contents onto the floor, and let the pups clean it up.  They love it, and E thinks it's hilarious to feed the dogs.
