September 2012 Moms

The nerve of some people.

DS's party was Sunday. I had two people text me before the party (that was at 2pm) "are you having food?".

Then, I brought the leftover cupcakes to work today so they wouldn't be at home begging me to eat them and some random stranger asked me on my way in if could they have one. Ummm, sure.

I would never do either of these two things. Anyone else have some WTF moments they'd like to share?

Re: The nerve of some people.

  • I think it is a little weird they asked if you were having food at the party, but since it was at 2pm and not a "usual" meal time like noon/1 for lunch or 6ish for dinner, I bet that's why they asked? Maybe?  My BFF had her daughters parties (school aged) from 2-4 usually so that she can just serve cake/ice cream and not have to serve a full meal to so many kids.

That is weird that a stranger asked if they could have a cupcake on your way in.  Some people really are the "office food vultures."

  • I don't see anything wrong with asking someone if there will be food at a party they are hosting. If it wasn't clear in your invitation, then I'd make sure, too.

As for the cupcake, that's just strange.

  • I would have asked about food for a 2pm party if it were not on the invitation. I put 'Join us for snacks and cake' in our invites so there would be no question. I did have sandwiches, and apps, but not enough to fill everyone up.

It is weird to ask a stranger for a cupcake, but I have had randos in my building ask jokingly. Weird.

  • Before I was a parent, I probably wouldn't have asked because it wouldn't have mattered to me.  Now it matters because I have to know if I should feed her before we come or not. :-)

The stranger and the cupcake?  Also weird.  Am I the only one who doesn't like eating food from randos?  I have a hard time at my work pot lucks because I don't know everyone.  At my old job there were only 9 of us in the office and I had the longest time there, so I knew everyone really well. It just weirds me out sometimes.

  • I personally wouldn't do either of those things, but I also wouldn't be too bothered if someone else did. Sure, it's a little weird but not too bad.

My WTF: I went to get bagel and coffee from Panera yesterday, while carrying W the whole time. I manage to pay and get my stuff all with one hand, no big deal.  But as I'm walking out with my arms/ hands completely full, this guy chases me down to tell me I dropped some change by the register. He wasn't bringing it to me, he expected me to go back and pick it up. Seriously??? Sure, let me drop my kid, my food, and my purse and crawl around looking for my lost pennies. Get a life, guy. I just stared at him in disbelief and said "Uh, you can keep it."

  • My grandmother's husband did nothing but complain about how cold it was at Hannah's party.  He made this big deal about visibly shivering, and saying that he was going to sit inside the whole time.  I already can't stand him, so I was like 'Alright, you're going to be pretty lonely.'  It was 60+ degrees and sunny out.

He then bitched to my mother that I didn't comment on his 'homemade' card, and that when I thanked him, I called him 'Bob' and not 'Grandpa'.  He's not my grandpa, and I was 21 when he married my grandmother, and he's a huge asshole.

Ha ha, this made me laugh. I'm the exact same way. I cannot eat when there are work pot lucks because I need to know the environment my food was prepared in before I could eat it. What if the person had cats and they let them roam the counter tops and their might be cat hair in the food. I don't know. Gross. I'm sure most people's food is fine, but you just can't be too sure. LOL. If I knew the people well that's another story.

Also, I would not think it's that weird for someone in the same building to ask if they could have a cupcake. When you work in the same building even if you don't know each other you kind of just have an unspoken connection. :)

  • It wouldn't bother me if someone asked if there was food. Although, people know that's the only reason I have parties.

If your goal was to not eat the cupcakes and give them away, why would it be weird to give one away?

Because I was taking them to my office/co-workers, not offering them to random employees at the hospital. They weren't even visible in the box. "Oh what you got in there, can I have some". Just weird to me. I would never ask a stranger for their food.

Well, that's different. I thought you meant it was an employee you didn't know. Maybe there was actually something wrong with him? IDK.

Whatever the case, I hope it brightened their day. I shouldn't get my panties on a wad over silly stuff anyways.

  • I would have been a smartass about the food, and responded with something like "nope. everyone fends for themselves, hunger games style."

As for the cupcake, definitely weird IMO.  I would NEVER approach a person I didn't know and ask them for a home-baked or home-cooked item they were carrying.  You just never know what's in it!

  • I'm late, but I have two for today. First, my mil let my 4 year old fall off a chair holding dd during her picture taking today (she didn't have the camera, I did). Second, what would possess my father to walk around my house barefoot when he has a nasty foot/toe fungus that he's had for years? He's never done it before. I'm off to bleach my floors.

  • I think it is kind of odd to ask about food being served at the party. If I'm unsure about food being served, I just feed my kids before taking them there. If there is food - great - if not, they aren't evil hungry elves.

I, personally, wouldn't ask a stranger for food, but that's just me.

  • I don't think it's the nicest way of asking, but if the invite wasn't clear (ie, "Cake and Punch" or "Lunch" or whatever) I can see asking about food.  I'm always the person who assumes that the 2pm party means no food, or just light snacks, and then eats, and then shows up to a giant spread.  Or that the 5-8 pm party means food and then they put out a bowl of chips.  So I can understand asking (but I would have done it in a nicer way than a curt text).

    The cupcake thing was weird.

We used to have a woman at my workplace who stole everyone's food. If there was a bag of pretzels on someone's desk, she took it. Candy dish? She emptied it out. Leftover food from a meeting? She would take an entire pizza or sandwich tray home with her. She one time actually took half a sandwich someone had sitting out on their desk. It was like she had no boundaries whatsoever. Very odd that no one in HR told her to knock it off.

I know, right? It should be grounds for firing, IMO.

@melody921 It is totally grounds for firing.  She is STEALING right off people's desk.  What's the different if she steals my sandwich off my desk or my cell phone off my desk, ugh!
