Filthy Work Environment

The filth at my new job is overwhelming.  I work in an office, but it should be the feature for the pilot show:  "Hoarders:  The Office."  I could go on and on with specifics... I don't judge, and how one lives at home is their business, but for goodness sake, we're sharing this work space!  This was the only job with a great commute, close to daycare, which enables me to have about 45 extra mins both before and after work.  I have plenty of time to talk with teacher at drop off, and pretty much no matter how late DS gets up, we're always on time.  Not to mention, if he's sick, I can be there in about 7 minutes for pickup.

I'm about 6 wks. pregnant, so the extra time will definitely come in handy as I get bigger and slower.  I feel like the commute is a priority.  I don't like much else about it, and I found it through an agency, so I'm currently a temp.  The area does not have any other companies with opportunities in my industry, so if I leave, I would face a 45 minute commute to the city.

Re: Filthy Work Environment

  • I've had a long commute in the past.  I would just stick it out.

  • Could you clean ?
That was my first thought.  "I'll just clean it up."  It's beyond what I can do walking in as a new person.  It's not like there is just some dust, although plenty of that; they use all paper, and are totally antiquated.  The stacks of files are endless, and piled everywhere, as are misc. boxes of everything from Christmas decorations, to supplies of all kinds.  I at least cleaned my desk.  This work space was so filthy, it actually came out a different color after cleaning.  I've only been there since Monday, and I've volunteered to do some reorganizing, but there's truly no where for this stuff to go.  There's barely any room to walk, and every surface is cluttered with every kind of misc. item.  Plus, as a new person just walking in, I don't get the feeling that my supervisor (only other person in the dept.) was too keen on my making changes to her "system".

It's really, really bad and I just don't know if I can spend 40 hours per week there.  I'm burnt out and depressed after only 4 days.  It doesn't help that they hired me too early, and my supervisor has been in training every day since I've started.  I have nothing to do but sit amongst the mess.

  • Keep the area around you squeaky clean and stick it out if you can. Keep some Clorox wipes at your desk and use them on any surface that you have to use outside your cubicle/office/desk.
  • You'll probably feel better once you actually start working when your supervisor is out of training. I would just try to keep you desk as a sacred space - no clutter, dust, etc in your area and keep it to that. The rest of the office, ie - other people's desks, is not your business so try not to let it stress you out.

  • Besides your nasty desk, it sounds like this place is chaotic and cluttered but not filthy.  To me, filthy is like, I'd rather go to bathroom at the coffee shop next door because the one here is too dirty.  Or you won't even put your food in the fridge because you're afraid it'll come out covered in salmonella.  Personally I'd try to stick it out and hopefully you'll be able to work on organizing once you've settled in.
