Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone start transition out of Merlins Sleep Suit?

Hi Everyone,

So, my LO is 25 weeks. I had started the transition around 23 weeks to get her out of the sleep suit-naps in a long sleeper and sleep sack, and she was doing great until her little tooth start popping out. she did some 45 minute naps but some naps were 1.5-2 hours.

so, I figured it was kind of cruel to take away something that was obviously comforting and familiar when she was in pain, so I kept the sleep suit. then, after her tooth popped out, her grandpa and grandma visit-bringing with them a cold.   So now she's fighting a cold, and since I have her mattress elevated to help her sleep, she has rolled down the one time I didn't have her in her suit for a nap (in the wash). AND we're going on a 5 day trip next week, which is probably not a good time to take the suit away either.

SO-the goal is to start the transition out of the suit at 7 months.  So my question for all of you who have transitioned/started the transition

-How did you do this?  Did you do naps, or all at once?

-How long did it take?

-How old was your LO?

The reason I'm wanting to do it now is she's more mobile and has had some decent naps in the sleeper and sack.  She can roll to front to back, and is almost crawling and close to sitting up on her own.  I'd like to get her out before it becomes too much of a crutch as well.

TIA!

Any feedback is appreciated!

Re: Anyone start transition out of Merlins Sleep Suit?

  • My DS rolled onto his stomach one night in his sleep suit, so I decided to cut him cold turkey.  So far the nights have gone smoothly.  Naptime, however, is a different story.  He cannot get himself to sleep during naptime, where he used to go right down in the sleep suit.

I have introduced a lovey, but it hasn't worked yet.  I am actually writing this while he is screaming in his crib :) I would maybe transition in steps.  Maybe start with naps, and then work your way to night time.  Or maybe try the opposite, which clearly I needed to do.  Good luck!!

  • We are doing naps first. Yesterday she had 3 naps of 30-45 min a piece (after 10 min of crying with comfort checks) instead of 2 naps of 1.5-2 hours a piece.

Today she fell asleep fast but woke up and didn't fall back asleep. I have her in a sleeper, I might just double her sleepers instead of a sleep sack so she can roll back to her back easier if she wants too.

She also had a slight cold as well. Ick

  • DS just rolled over in the SleepSuit so we have to cut it out ASAP.  The double sleeper is a great idea.  I might try 2 Halo sleep sacks and see how that goes.

  • let me know-nap #2 wasn't as easy but she also just got her 6 month shots and had fallen asleep in the car ride home but woke up-ugh. idk.  she's been asleep a little over 30 min though so hopefully we get through one sleep cycle.

We have been suit free now for 3 days.  Turns out that he wants to sleep on his belly and he does fine without it.  I have done 2 cotton halo sleepsacks over his PJs because 1 - its cold in our house and 2 - I thought it might help him feel more cuddled up.  No issues really at all.  He still has a bit of a hard time falling asleep but he's getting better and he's been sleeping about 8 to 5 (eating at 10pm then at 5, back to sleep until 7).  I have no idea where my awful sleeper went but I think he's just finally outgrowing some his sleep issues.  I hope.  I just figured we needed to cut it out cold turkey and I've been more than surprised it's gone so well.

  • We went cold turkey on the sleep suit. It was a couple of rough nights, but we haven't looked back.

And if you're waiting for the 'perfect' time, there won't be one. I'd be just as inclined to stop using the suit when she's sick or teething - she's already miserable, right? Why have her miserable for 1-2 weeks, when you could consolidate it into one?

  • We're officially out!  She's done great-I did 2 fleece sleepers for a little while and last night she slept all night in just one. once she got used to sleeping on her belly, I think that helped a lot.

  • We are on night three without. The first night I ended up putting it back on around 10 p.m. after she woke up screaming and wouldn't calm down.

The second night was much better. About an hour and a half after she went down, I heard her whimper so I ran in and popped the paci in real quick before she woke up. The rest of the night she was much squirmier than normal but she stayed asleep, aside from her usual 2 a.m. wake up.

Tonight, so far so good, but she's only been asleep about an hour, so we will see.
  • We transitioned at 6 months when DS started rolling over in the suit. We went cold turkey and put him in a sleep sack... Took a couple days - but he never cried, just took a little longer to go to sleep. He ended up rolling onto his tummy to sleep and he has slept that way ever since... Honestly think that is probably how they are meant to sleep!

This has been my EXACT same experience.

  • How's naps for you guys? Nighttime sleep is still 10-11 hours, but naps are crap.  Pretty sure it's just standard baby shenanigans that happens at 6 months (wanting to crawl but not quite there, realizing how fun mommy is and wanting to explore more) but also could be suite related.

    ah well.

  • Naps are crap with or without the suit for us.
  • We went cold turkey at a little after 6 months, when he was starting to get too mobile for me to feel comfortable (it was also getting hot out).

His sleep was about the same before and after taking away the suit--it didn't seem to have a significant impact.

  • we've been out over a week in a half now.  Naps are  give or take-she jUST started to figure out crawling so of course she just paces her crib over and over. Saturday she took 2 naps at 1.5-2 hours and yesterday both naps were 30 minutes. who knows.
