Opinions Needed: Glider vs. Recliner

I need to get the glider ordered for our nursery, and I'm torn.  The one I'm looking at ordering comes in two versions:  (A) Swivel glider w/ (optional) gliding ottoman, or (B) Swivel glider recliner.  The plain glider does not recline, and the recliner doesn't glide once it's in the reclined position.  Glider + ottoman = Glider recliner, in terms of price.  I am unsure if I will care about not being able to glide once reclined?  Or will I be mad that I can't recline at all even though I can glide to my heart's content with my feet up?  If it matters, I plan to breastfeed.

Which would you choose?

Re: Opinions Needed: Glider vs. Recliner

  • I've had both and I prefer the recliner was easier for BFing. DD1 hated rocking of any kind so the recliner was nice.

  • I had a rocking recliner and loved it.
  • I have glider and ottoman, it does not recline. It's worked out perfect for us.

Have you looked into buying a used one? Usually they stay in excellent condition because people take care of things in the nursery. I got mine off Craig's list for $50. It was the exact one I was going to register for at BRU for $300. It was like new.

  • I'm getting a recliner, so on the outside chance one of us needs to sleep in there, there is a place to sleep.
  • I have both. We bought recliners for the living room (including a love seat where each side rocks independently) and a glider for DS's room.

I preferred the recliner. It was much more comfortable for nursing. Normally I'd recline to nurse. The rocking motion was only used for calming a fussy baby.

  • It took some hunting for something that will go in the nursery and one day be able to come out into the living room but we found a gliding recliner. It's definitely more expensive than your standard rocker or glider but we figure if it's something we might end up spending a lot of time in we might as well be comfortable so for us well for the $700 price tag. We also plan on using it for years to come. My sister got one with her first and they still use it to read or just snuggle in before bed. It's become a kind of ritual. My other sister wished she would have gotten one instead of the "regular" glider. There's my piece. Good luck!

Ditto...we still have it and it's already set up in the nursery! Love it.

I have looked on Craigslist a few times,.  Unfortunately so far the ones in my area are either old and not in great shape, or are not the style I am looking for.

Thank you to everyone for the responses, it sounds like the gliding recliner is a clear winner!  I'm glad I asked, because I had been leaning toward the glider/ottoman.

  • I'd go with the glider with ottoman.  DD wasn't a huge snuggler, but she LOVED movement.  When I was breastfeeding all the time and DD was newborn-about 5 months, she was still sleeping in our bedroom, so nighttime feedings tended to be in my bed, and daytime feedings on the couch.  I didn't start using our glider until she was sleeping in her crib (after 5 months) and breastfeeding would have been difficult for me in a semi-reclined position- I tended to have to lean forward a bit or be completely lying down.  After she weaned to bottles (after 8 months, I probably would have used a recliner function, but she was only waking once a night at that point anyway, and found the motion of a glider soothing, so that's what worked for us.  I do use our ottoman all the time.
  • I've got the glider and ottoman, the glider reclines and still glides while in that position. Both the glider and ottoman can be locked if you want to be stationary instead if gliding....it's Dutalier brand from BRU. I'm a FTM and I love it, but who knows if LO will haha!
  • We had a glider that had a multi position recline option and an ottoman.  It still wasn't as comfortable as an actual recliner for lounging while feeding.  I am debating on putting the glider in DS1's room and getting a recliner for DS2's nursery.  I wish I had gotten a recliner from the beginning.
