Babies: 3 - 6 Months

STM ?: travel at 9 mos or 17 mos?

DH and I are considering going on a family vacation, either when LO is 9 mo or later at 17 mo. We're trying to figure out what would be easiest and least stressful travel on a long flight to a beach destination. We'd be staying at a place with a washer and dryer as well as a full kitchen.

Those of you who have traveled with your LOs, please share what age you think would be easier! TIA!!

  • Either way it will be tiring and not very relaxing for you. I might wait until LO was older so that he or she could actually, play at the beach. We took DS to the beach and had to basically hold him the whole time, he was fussy, and we didn't get much beach time. I think once the baby is walking, it might be better. As for the flight, no clue... Might be easier when baby is younger.

  • Ehh, for us, 9-18 months were the worst for traveling.  It was like DD was too old and aware of her environment to just eat/look around/sleep, but not old enough where she understood that she had to stay in her seat for extended periods of time.  She's 3.5 now and an excellent traveler, so I think it's just a matter of outgrowing it.  To answer your question, I'm leaning towards 17 months just because at that age, DD could run around the airport a little and wear herself out and I'd be guaranteed a nap for at least some of the flight.
  • I would say 17 months is better. By then they are usually down to one nap. At 9 months some babies are still taking a morning nap and afternoon nap.

  • It really depends. If your LO is crawling at 9 months, then you're going to be spending a lot of time making sure she (he?) doesn't eat the sand. You also have to worry about 2 naps.

At 17 months, you'll definitely spend a lot of time making sure LO doesn't eat the sand, but she might be more entertained by the water. She'll also be sitting, crawling, and walking, which can make things both easier and harder. One nap a day is nice too.

  • All very helpful points. I think we've decided (much to my dissappuntment!) that its not going to be worth the time/money to try and make it work. I think we'll instead rent a house lakeside (within driving distance!) and make it a big family vacation (like, bring the grandparents too!). Thanks ladies!!
