Nurse vs. Pump

My DD is 10 months old and I have now returned to work. I do not have a large stash because I was not expecting to go back to work. Anyways, my first day at work she took a 5 oz. bottle and I was only able to pump 2 oz. in 15 min. I used to pump for 25 min when I EPed for the first six months. I know that baby will nurse more than you pump but should I be worried about the 3 oz difference? Should my DH give solids and then offer a bottle to reduce the amount she drinks? I know she should get a majority of BM until one but I don't know what to do.

Re: Nurse vs. Pump

  • Your body needs time to get used to the pump. It's possible you might need to pump 2x to make up for one feeding. As baby gets older it's harder to respond to the pump. I had the same problem when I went back to work at 10 months PP. I eventually just gave up pumping, nursed AM & PM and all day on weekends and gave formula or milk. It wasn't worth the frustration to me, and I knew that it was a normal physical reaction. You literally have to be conditioned to the pump over time, it's not some automatic thing.

  • How long are you at work for? Is it a short day since she only takes 5 oz while you're gone?

My dd also only takes one bottle while I'm at work and here's what I do.
In the morning I feed her one side and pump the other. I also pump at work. Sometimes I pump a whole 4 oz bottle and sometimes I only pump 2 oz. If I don't pump enough either time I always have that second pump to add to it. If not I put the extra in the freezer and grow my stash little by little.

  • I always had to pump a bit more frequently to ge what DD1 took (I also pumped at night--right before bed--to top up stash). Everyone is different...my body does take as well to pumping as some. 5 oz seems like a huge bottle though...aim for 1 oz per hour and check out kellymom for guidelines for bottlefeeding a breastfed baby.
