Name advice

Ok moms, what would you do?
I don't want this to be about nationality so please no negative comments!

My husband and I love the name AVA for a little girl - however, our last name is Braun.

Whenever I tell anyone if we have a girl we are going to name her Ava, they say "oh that was hitlers girlfriends name .. "Eva Braun but they say it like Ava"

What do you think? I never even knew this until I started saying out loud our girl name!! Eek!!

Re: Name advice

  • There are many beautiful names out there, I would avoid that one though :-)

  • Yikes! Unfortunately She will have to explain that one through her entire life.

  • I would also think twice about that one.

  • Yeah, you really can't do that. Even if she can get past school yard bullying, she'll have a hard time finding job - no one will read past her name on the top of her resumé.

There are some close ones that might work - Ada, Eve maybe?

  • Also, tell me your due date isn't close to 4/20 that woul make for some serious questions

  • Yep, don't go there. I love Ava as well, and because our last name is very German, and I even hesitate a little. I would not even consider it if Braun was actually my last name.

  • Ok thanks all for your feedback! Yes we would never want to set our child up for bullying or anything of the sort - I just never realized this until a few brought it to our attention - there are many beautiful names - we will find another ! ♥️
  • I'm sorry but it was 60 years ago people should just get a grip! Your child is not hitlers gf lol! If you like the name go for it, I think it's sad that people are thinking negatively about a name! There are probably many people like yourself who didn't now that trivia fact! If you really love it and don't like anything else then I don't see the harm I would never meet someone and go "oh your name is Joseph Stalin that's horrible I don't like you cause you must be exactly like him cause of your name" it's ridiculous! X
  • I just think if you LOVE the name then it shouldn't matter what people think, I've got a son called Noah and no one has ever mentioned an ark to me! I just don't think Eva Braun is a widely known figure, I bet it was older people that mentioned it to this lady! Look I'm
Just saying that it's this couples decision and everyone on the post was being negative on the post I just wanted to let her know that not everyone thinks negatively about the name! Ava is a very popular name so her girl would probably be one of three on her class and she would be called Ava B anyway! Is there anyway you would hyphenate your and your hubby's last names so it has a buffer or could have like Ava- grace Braun!
  • I'm 22 years old and have no clue what that reference of the name is to. If you like the name then go for it! I've learned that at least a handful of people will have nasty input on your name choice, handful will find ways to tease your baby about it, but the baby will make the name! Go with what you like :)
  • Not to mention if we were a November group it may be different (but probably not cause its still crazy) but we are April and Hitlers birthday is 4/20 so having Hitlers girlfriends name and if she delivers 4/20 that child is going to have a lifetime of judgments. Cause one is a coincidence but 2 is getting a little much to justify.

Anyone with a high school education or a subscription to the History Channel should know who Eva Braun is.

I LOVE the name Eva/Ava, but you really really can't name your child Ava Braun.   I mean, people have gotten in legal trouble for naming their kids Adolf Hitler Lastname and Heinrich Himmler Lastname.   Ava Braun is a no-brainer in my book.

I'm sorry you have to abandon a name you love because of a negative historical association, but that's just how it works out sometimes.

  • Wow? Never heard of Eva Braun? I mean, I'm older, but, not that much older. I don't think they stopped teaching World War II in school, right??
    BabyFruit Ticker mean_girls_35345
  • At first I didn't read this carefully because I thought it was just about the name Ava, and I didn't think that anyone would make the association. I didn't realize the OPs last name was Braun. Yikes.
  • I'm going to have to say no as well. I'm sure you can find another name you both love that is not the same as a negative historical reference.
  • ha!  well call me stupid, because i definitely don't have any clue who eva braun is either.  i'll own my historical cluelessness.

true story:  i was well into adulthood when i learned England was an island.  for real.  i wish i was kidding.  i attended 3 different high schools and due to the switching around, i missed a few classes and double-took a few other classes.  i think world geography (and evidently history in the 1900s??) slipped through the cracks :)

I must have slipped through the cracks as well because I had no clue who Eva Braun was. In my defense, i hate history.

Maybe its my hatred of history and my lack of knowledge, but  I wouldn't think twice about an Ava Braun.  Plus its Ava, not Eva...so its not even the same. I knew an Adolf growing up, I never thought OMG, HItLER!!

Someone mentioned hyphenating like Ava-Grace. I think that's nice!  EventualLy she'll marry and change her last name anyways!

  • What about the name Ada? It sounds similar but is still quite different.

Um, LOTS of women choose not to change their last names when they get married.  I don't think it's fair to assume that a girl will automatically change her name.  Or even get married for that matter!  Though if I had a name like Ava Braun, I would probably petition to change my name as soon as I was legally able to do so.

  • That's such a shame. It is a lovely name, but unfortunately, with the historical association, I would agree with the other ladies to avoid it. Sorry!

I didn't mean at as an assumption that everyone changes their name at marriage. I didn't change mine. But, if the name is horrible, she probably would!

So if you think the name is horrible and the child would probably want to change her name, why are you saying the OP should go ahead and name her child that?
For crying out loud! I like the name! Shoot me. I have history ignorance.

I wouldn't worry too much about this, Many many many people think New Zealand is actually attached to Australia - like America and Canada. But they are way way apart - it takes 4 hrs to fly from NZ to Australia!!!! Man I had to contend with that a lot!! (Im Kiwi BTW!)

  • I wouldn't care about the association between the two names. BUT I think if you're already having doubts and worries then don't do it!
  • Thank you to all my birth club moms for your opinions - after all that's what we are all here for.. Support right ? Your all very intelligent and hopefully we all learn a little something from each other and .. History haha! Xoxox

It's like the people who think Alaska is a little island in the south pacific down near hawaii because of how a lot of maps are set up.
