Placenta on top?

When I went for my last U/S the tech had told me that my placenta was over top of the baby, and that it would be more difficult for me to keep feeling the baby move. Which seems right because I was at first and now it has stopped. She also said it would make my sonograms further along harder to see. Does anyone else have this? If so did you hear the same thing?

Re: Placenta on top?

  • Not with this LO but with DS I had an anterior placenta. Honestly, I barely felt him move my entire pregnancy.  I only ever felt the huge movements, like when he rolled over or stuck his butt out my side.  I never felt kicks, punches, or hiccups.  And yes it made ultrasounds more difficult, I had a 3D one done and it wasn't very clear at all.

  • I was told I also have an anterior placenta, which is fine, but it will still be a while before I feel kicks. You aren't alone!
  • I too have been told I have an anterior placenta. They told me the baby's movements won't be felt until a bit later which isn't too great for my pGal brain :( everyday I just pray and wish I could feel her kick or move just so I can put my mind at ease. Hang in there Hun! It's not really a big deal other than the movement aspect. Hugs

My plan was to have a 3D one, but after hearing it wouldn't be worth the money I decided not to.

  • I had an anterior placenta the first time and have one again with Baby B this time around. It's just as common as any other placenta location. As my pregnancy with my daughter progressed I felt her a ton. Most people don't have ultrasounds past the anatomy scan anyway, so I don't think this is something to worry about. I only had later scans because of complications, and they were still able to see what they needed to.

That's great to hear, the best part about being pregnant is being able to feel your little one. Does Baby A have a posterior placenta? And if you don't mind me asking, how is it carrying two little ones :) Twins are such a blessing.
  • I have had an anterior placenta with both my pregnancies. With DS1, I didn't feel movement until 22-24 weeks (can't remember exactly). This time around, I just started feeling movement when I roll onto my stomach in bed.

I've had anterior placenta with both #1 and now #2 - been feeling movement though and felt movement around now with #1. They've never mentioned it being an issue at u/s and always been able to see what they need to see. With #1 they did an u/s at 34wks to check a kidney issue discovered at a/s without any issues that I was aware of anyway.

We never did the elective 3d ones, so I'm not sure if it matters for that.

ETA - regardless of placenta location, normal range of feeling first movement is between 16-25wks. For example, if baby is facing your back and kicking you likely won't feel it regardless.

  • I also have this placenta placement and like PP was told it'd be awhile until I'd feel movement.  I thought I had felt flutters a few times but it hasn't been consistent at all and probably was just my brain thinking it was movement.  I was a little bummed because I'm eager to feel him.  He's always moving around a TON at my appts so I know he's an active guy even though I can't feel him yet.
