help me find a vacuum: shark vs. dyson?

hi ladies, so i'm looking for a new vacuum, one - obviously - that has it all:  great suction, relatively easy to maneuver, easy to maintain (our current one has a bajillion parts that need to be cleaned), etc.  i'm up at this ungodly hour watching a shark rotator vacuum infomercial and I have to admit, i'm totally "sucked" into it.  but a couple of friends have actually recommended a dyson.  any recommendations from you ladies?  or any other vacuum that you love?  any help would be greatly appreciated.  we've only had our current vacuum for about a year and a half and it sucks (sorry, couldn't help myself).

Not a fan of the Sharks.  They are cheap and honestly anything that needs to have it's own informercial isn't going to be all that is says.
That said, I have a Bissell Healthy Home.  I've had it for 6 years, almost 7 and it is still going strong!

  • I have a shark- bought it in BJ's and its been 5 years and i still love it. I upgraded because of the cats and couldn't afford a dyson at the time. I would say if you don't want to spend the money on a Dyson get the Shark. I love the pet accessories that come with it too- not just for pets :) makes vaccuming the stairs sooo easy. I've had a bissel and left it for the shark.... the bissel would spit the kitty litter out at my ankles as i vacguum. that's why i switched when I had hard wood floor. plus it has a 'suck' only option to stop the brushes from spinning. Now that I have LO, the only issue i have with the shark is that 'kix' vs 'cheerios' are harder to vacuum up because they are round and roll away but yes it will vacuum up and entire box of emptied out cheerios on the floor like there is no tomorrow!
  • Dyson. All day long .
  • I love my dyson. It gets used every day at my house. We have a golden retriever and a cat and they dyson gets all the hair. We have had it for about 4 years now and it still works awesome. Definitely worth the money
  • Neither, go for a Miele. Best vacuum ever!!! Pricy but worth every penny. Reviews are better than a dyson as well

  • I like my shark but upgraded from a Bissell. I've never used a Dyson.
  • I have a  Dyson vacuum and a shark steamer.. love both of them.

My only issue with the Dyson is that the cannister one is not as heavy duty as the UK versions. The vacuums head and tubes/handles here have way more plastic ..for weight I guess.. but despite that small thing I love my Dyson.  they didnt have them when I first moved here and I was gutted after leaving mine back in the UK.

Love the shark steamer for my wooden floors :)

  • thanks ladies...I appreciate the comments.  i'll research the dysons...don't even know how much they are, but I've heard they're pretty expensive, but worth it.
  • I love love love my shark rotator lift away.  And yes, I bought it off of the infomercial and yes I love it and it is the best vacuum I have ever owned.

  • I have had my Dyson for 1.5 years and never had one issue. I love that it came with a 5 years warranty. That alone is worth the extra money.

  • Love my dyson!!!!!
  • I used to sell vacs when I worked retail. The sharks would spark when we plugged them in, and one caught fire. Dyson all day long.
  • We have a Dyson and it was seriously love at first sight.  It works great compared to our old vacuum, and it's so easy to take care of  - well worth the money.  I'll never buy another brand.

We had a Shark handheld and it was awful...we ended up getting rid of it because it was more hassle than what it was worth.

  • My mom swears by her oreck professional...she said its better than her d Kirby and much lighter and self propelled. She has 9 grandchildren that come over practically daily and 7 of those are boys tracking in the day.

  • Dyson has a lifetime warranty :)
  • I have a dyson and love it!  Never used a shark before but my mother has one and she likes it.
  • If I could have any vacuum, of get a Dyson Animal. My mom has one and its worth every penny. That being said, a Shark was more in my price range and its better than any vacuum I've owned.
  • I LOVE my Dyson. We have the yellow ball, not sure of the model. We have two dogs and it works great we use it on carpet, hard wood, and tile. It is better than the sniffer on the wood.

  • okay, so looked up dyson...people have warned me that they're expensive, but worth it, yada yada...

    600 DOLLARS?!

holy freakin' moly!  okay, I guess i'd better start saving.  hope this vacuum sucks more than just my money.  (sorry)

  • Check Amazon and add a few to your cart.. login several times a day if you can .. prices on Amazon fluctuate on some stuff  throughout the day and you can get some good deals if you are able to wait a while.

I also notice deals on Dysons now and then at Best buy, Frys and places like that...  I have one of the cannister Dysons and I sure as heck didn't pay $600 for the one I got in the US, I think it was about $250... so check some of the other/older models out.

hmmm....interesting!!!  didn't think of that! thanks!  yah, 250 is waaaay better than 600!
  • We have an Electrolux (the EL4300 Ultra Bagless Canister Vacuum). It is amazing. It gets every last speck of dust possible.

I like the canister vs. a regular upright vacuum because I like to get edges and corners, and this one has a motor in the attachment so it has extra suction. It is a little annoying to drag the canister around though.

If you get a canister, make sure it has the extra motor in the vacuum head or it won't be very powerful.

If you are unsure, check out some different models on Amazon and read the reviews. Anything with like 400 reviews that are all pretty good is probably good, but unique to your situation (like if you have a dog and none of the 400 reviewers did, you probably won't be happy with it).
