Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

liking dog food

So DS enjoys eating dog food.  Not that we let him obviously but he has gotten into it before when our dog is eating and continues to go back for more.  The other day he realized he was tall enough to reach the container we have our dog's food in and he started eating some.  Typically when I ask him to spit out something in his mouth he does but the dog food not at all he seems to enjoy it.  Isn't that strange, how could it possibly taste good?  Is my kid the only crazy one?!

  • I could have written this myself. When DD thinks we aren't paying attention to her (I'm cooking or picking up) she heads straight for the dog food. It's like it is the best thing in the world to her. Ugh! So no, your son is not the only one. I have to find another place to put the dog food. Oh and she loves to play in the dogs water too,

  • Haha I'm so glad I'm not the only one! My son goes and grabs the food and when we try to take it out of his hands he will attempt to really quickly put it in his mouth, then when we get it all, he licks the remnence off his hands! He acts like we don't feed him when dog food is around lol!

haha no mine tries sometimes. She knows now she's not supposed to eat it but sometimes I'll see her start to put it in her mouth then gets a grin when I tell her no. It's a constant battle, she loves to play in it, throw it, hand feed the dogs (they're getting spoiled lol). She thankfully has passed the eating it for the most part, now it's into the splash in the dogs water phase :(

I agree though it must taste gross! But don't worry my LO is a crazy one too with yours.

  • We had this for a while - I honestly think it's more for the attention than anything else.  Because moms and dads seem to get so animated about it, it becomes fun for the toddler to do.  When we stopped making a big deal about it  - just a "that food is Ringo's and we don't eat Ringo's food"  without the big reaction, he stopped doing it.

  • My kid is the pickiest eater ever and SUPER selective about anything he eats. However, more than once, I've caught him trying to eat dog food or munch on a dog biscuit when he's followed me into the pantry. All my efforts to fed him good meals and he just wants dog food.

  • My son also enjoys the taste of dog food. Not just the dog food at our house, but at my parents' and our friends' home as well. I really think he likes the taste of it. Good to know my kid isn't the only weirdo out there that actually enjoys the taste.

  • Hahah, awesome. My 16-month-old always tries to sneak food from my Saint Bernard's dish if I'm not paying attention. So gross. Whatever. They've both had their shots.
