cloth vs disposable diapers

I want to start using cloth diapers. Any suggestions on brands that work and experiences on brands to stay away from?

Thanks!

Re: cloth vs disposable diapers

  • Yeah the CD board is best place to ask. We do prefolds and covers. Our recent fav covers this time are Best Bottoms. We love using snappis and a diaper sprayer with them.

  • All of this - we use GMDs and anytime any issues crop up the CD board on the bump is super helpful.
  • I use Kawaii one size diapers. They are bulky, but fit my 7 pound baby. They are meant to last until baby is completely out if diapers. Most of their diapers are much less expensive than other brands, but they still have amazing quality.
I love them. It is so incredibly easy to cloth diaper. And surprisingly fun!

  • I have some Alvas, BumGenius, and GoodMama fitteds.  Of all of them I like the Alvas the best and they are the cheapest.  The BGs are nice, but because they are hook and loop they pill easily.  The GMs I just flat out hate.  Sooooooo bulky!  I'm selling them all and buying more Alvas.  The Alva bamboo inserts are amazing, too.

Unfortunately, my kid has little chicken legs and is still too small for most of the diapers.  We can wear them for a few hours only before every single one leaks.  I cannot wait for my baby to chunk up, I'm sick of changing his clothes all the time!

  • I love our Peachy Baby AI2 diapers. They fit the best on our LO, and I like the AI2's better in general.

  • I am going to exclusively use Best Bottom cloth diapers (nickisdiapers.com)
My son is 9 days old and has a circumcision healing, so as soon as that is in the clear then I will begin the cloth diaper use.
I chose Best Bottoms because they have snap-able inserts and wipeable diaper shells. They can be washed every other day with regular Tide detergent:) I researched a lot and this system seemed the most cost-effective and convenient. The whole system to last a baby from birth to potty training is about $400. It'll save you about $1500 compared to disposables and are GREEN.

OS diapers might not fit your newborn right away. My LO is 5 weeks old and he's still in NB diapers (GMD workhorses) and there is no way any of our OS will fit him.
FWIW: we got all fitteds and covers for the newborn stage. For when he gets bigger I have a small stash of fitteds and pockets. I didn't want to buy a ton of one style and discover we don't like it or it doesn't work well for our LO
  • Thank you for all yall comments and suggestions. I guess I will try the CD board. My LO is 9 weeks and an itty bity thing, he is still in newborn pampers that's why I was trying to wait. It took so long for him tograduate from premie. I'm excited to get started.
