Turkey while pregnant

Am I really not supposed to eat turkey?? I don't remember that rule from my first pregnancy. All I want are turkey subs. A girl just wrote on fb that she was having turkey for the first time in 9 months. Is she being overly cautious? Or do I need to stop fantasizing about turkey?

Re: Turkey while pregnant

  • You run the risk of listeria poisoning the fetus if you eat lunch meat or hot dogs without warming them up to the point they are steaming. I know plenty of women who have eaten deli meat while pregnant and their babies have been just fine, but I wasn't willing to risk it and I abstained.

  • Technically you're supposed to heat it up to kill potential listeria. A lot of sub places are very familiar with toasting, or even double toasting, subs for pregnant women.

In reality, it's actually more likely that you'll get listeria from salads or produce than from deli meat. If you're eating from a clean place that goes through a lot of meat, so it's fresh, you're probably fine. It all depends on if you follow all the "rules" or not.

  • I worked in a very big hospital for almost ten years. The ONLY case of listeria poisoning came from straight from Mexico queso fresco cheese. Not pasteurized. Way back when on my BMB someone asked if nacho cheese (the liquid stuff) was safe because it was a soft cheese....
  • Just watch where you eat it from...no vending machine sandwiches. My doctor just said don't eat one every meal of every day...but mainly bc of nitrates and salt. You can get sicker from fruit and veggies.
  • Ok. Thank you ladies. Turkey sandwiches it is!!
