Cramping while getting back to running postpartum

I just gave birth to our first LO on Aug 6. I've been cleared to get back into my workout routine. Before I got pregnant, I worked out regularly and was in good shape; I'd run 6-10 miles 3-4 x/week along with visits to the gym just to give a general idea. I'm starting off slow now to get my momentum back up to where it used to be and putting in 3 miles. I ran 3 miles yesterday and this morning but was entirely uncomfortable during the run which puttered into a fast walk due to a horrible cramp under my left ribcage. I know cramping can be caused by dehydration but I found it odd that the pain occurred in the same area both days. Is there something else postpartum that may be causing a jabbing pain in my ribcage or am I simply just not getting enough water while I'm breastfeeding?

Re: Cramping while getting back to running postpartum

  • my DD was born Aug 6 of last year :)

I had a similar problem after DD was born and I was getting back into running again-- I  drank a lot more water and upped the potassium in my diet. It reduced the cramping IMMENSELY!

Also you are just getting back into your routine. I was expecting to be able to run like I used to right away- noooooppppe. I had to build back up to it.

Good luck! I hope this helps!

  • It does help! I soooo missed running my long miles while I was pregnant and now that I've revisited my old running path, I definitely felt like I'd be able to take off full force again...yea...NOPE. I'm going to try to up my water an potassium like you suggested and see if that doesn't help. Ty! Oh, and happy belated Birthday to your DD =)
