Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Early wakeup for several months

16 month DS has been waking up at 5am almost every morning.  Whether he goes to bed at 6:30 or 7;30 it is the same.  We have a super dark room, use lavendar spray, white noise, pacifier.  Anyone have a child that has the same pattern?

Right now daycare is transitioning to 1 nap so he is so tired much earlier (6:30) and can't really keep him up later.  he tries to fall alseep on his changing table!

  • DS has been getting up at 5 too, he is killing me b/c he goes to bed at 9.  We have moved it earlier but he still gets up at that time.  I think he is teething again so I am hoping that is why he isn't sleeping as well!

I would say though maybe he still needs 2 naps, do they have to transition him?

  • We've been facing this since 18 months.  He'll be 2 in a week and a half!  I will say this week he slept till 6:15 twice, so that's an improvement!

  • Sounds like us, bedtime is at 6:30 and he's up at 5:30 on average.  He teased us with almost a week of sleeping in until 6 am.  He actually gets up earlier if we try to move bedtime back.  We've just tried to adjust by getting to bed earlier ourselves, but it is rough some mornings!
  • This morning it was 4:55... just five more minutes, and it would have seemed so much more reasonable.  DH says "Sleep is good, we like to sleep!  Why do you get up so early?" over and over to him, like he can convince him to sleep longer, ha!  Today will be a two coffee day.
  • I have this problem too, and was thinking about trying those sleep clocks, but I wonder if they would work this early (15 months). 5:30, 5 I'm fine with but like you said anything before that seems too much. She's usually in bed by 6:45-7. She naps twice.  I did Ferber with her and she's historically gone down and slept through but I just don't think it's effective in the morning. I started trying it today though. It's pitch black in her room and it's dark when she wakes up anyway. She sleeps with white noise too. For a while she'd wake up babbling and amusing herself so I would just let her go until 6, when I would go get her. But lately she's waking up crying.

My husband passed away last October so it's just me trying to figure this out. Everything I read contradicts the other. She's going to bed too early, she's going down too late, she needs two naps, no it's because she should just be getting one. Or it's things we've been doing since she was very little, like white noise and a consistent bedtime routine.  I feel like I should try to resolve this early morning thing before I transition to two naps but who knows. I have found that when I try something, it works for a few days and then we're back to it.

  • Thank you everyone.  It's nice to feel not so alone. Yesterday he slept until 6:30!!  This morning was chirping at 5:15. :)  I think I have to accept there is no control.  He is a very happy / healthy toddler so I just have to be grateful for that.
