How many activities at birthday party?

I'm getting a very early head start on planning DS's 4th birthday party. He has requested a dinosaur theme. I feel like at age 4 it would be fun to have some activities set up for the kids. I've come up with a list of ideas but I'm not sure how many I should actually incorporate. Here's the list:

- Dino dig. set up a kiddie pool with rocks/sand, kids will dig for bones.

- Dino egg hunt. I have a bunch of Easter eggs left over that I can hide in the yard with treats inside.

- Dino croquet. This is a toy that we already have. It's 3 dinosaur shapes that you hit the croquet ball through.

- Dino ring toss. Another toy we already have.

- Dino sun catcher. A craft table set up where each kid can paint a plastic dinosaur sun catcher to take home.

- Dino bean bag toss.

- Dino fossil making. Another craft idea. Kids can press a small dinosaur toy into clay to make a fossil.

So, how many activities do you think would be appropriate and which would you choose? There will be 5-6 four year olds. I can set up a lot in our yard or move it indoors if weather doesn't cooperate.

I would do the egg hunt and then set up the Dino dig, croquet and ring toss to be played if they want to. I'm not a fan of crafts at birthday parties.

ditto. DS went to a party with a dino dig similar to what you mentioned and it was a big hit.

  • I vote 3, whichever you think would hold attention for longer than 2 minutes and won't really make much work or cleanup for you :). They all sound fun!
I had a craft as a backup thing at our bday party (it was at a local park) and only 1 kid did it out of 15!
  • I agree with the previous posters.  I've been to many 4 yr old parties and the required/structured activities always flopped and ended in melt downs.  But here people throw huge parties 15-20 kids- it gets wild.  I think having several optional things set up that they can flit about and parents can visit is more fun .  Sounds like you have put a lot of thought into it- sounds fun!

  • I would keep it simple, with minimal activities (maybe two or three). The parties I have been to didn't have planned activities, and they went really well. The kids just liked playing toys and eating, and the adults enjoyed socializing.

  • I haven't been to many parties yet, my kids are 1 and 3, but I would think the sun catcher and egg hunt 1st as a group, then the other activities available if kids want to as free play, in between eating or whatever.
  • After throwing a few large parties for my DD1, I would say I really enjoy the crafts for kids.  They all love it, and at 4, can actually focus.  Ring toss is not popular in my house.  Egg hunting (safari style) would be a huge hit I am sure.  We did "pin the tail" on the unicorn - it was awesome!!!  perhaps pin the tail on the dinasour?  I just bought poster board and drew the unicorn.  then bought neon pink and green poster board and cut tails.  Got them from the $1 store....so it was just a three dollar project that we played for 20 minutes.Going back to your question - I would say no more than THREE activities.

  • Activities are perfect for that age. We did them at DS' 4th birthday. It was Mickey Mouse themed. We did pin the ears on the Mickey? Donald Donald Duck (duck duck goose), popcorn Mickey with a parachute. We also did coloring pages as well.
