Cable Alternatives?

So, we've had it with Comcast.  Like, HAD IT.  We do want to keep some sort of 'cable like' (?) tv though; as in, we like to flip through channels to see what's on, and we like movie channels.  So if you don't have cable, what do you have?  We may or may not be able to get satellite because we're heavily wooded, but I'm going to have them come out to check the signals.  What about things like Roku?  I'm just not too familiar with the options so any input is appreciated!

Re: Cable Alternatives?

  • I had it with the cable company a couple weeks ago and canceled our service. We have a Roku and love it. It isn't the same as cable but there is no service charge, just pay for it once when you buy it, so it's cheap and I don't have to deal with the cable company but I can watch my shows on my television. Works for me. Good luck.
  • Loading the player...
  • We don't have cable- we have Netflix and Hulu plus- we have a blue ray player on the downstairs TV and it has pandora, netflix, hulu, youtube and amazon instant on it. We like it. We do miss watching the news though..

We are looking into Apple TV or Roku 3 right now for our TV upstairs... So far Roku 3 looks interesting! It can do a lot more than Apple TV.
  • HD antenna on our roof to get basic channels thru the air waves for free.  We also do hulu and the basic channels websites show tv shows the next day after they are aired.

Now here's my question though, do you hook Roku up to your antenna?  Or it just streams from your internet?  You can watch basic local channels, news, etc?  I just can't wrap my head around it I guess.

Yea, apparently our flat screen tv AND our blu ray play are both 'too old' to stream directly to.  Like, really????  Isn't it all kind of newer technology anyway???  First world problem I guess....
  • I have Netflix Apple TV Hulu plus and rabbit ears I do not miss cable at all!

It streams through the internet. When you turn on the "home screen" there is a list of options you can choose: Netflix, amazon, hulu, etc (there are a lot). You pick which one, say Netflix, and from there you can pick from your queue, look at the suggestions, type in a search, etc. I use the amazon one to buy movies because with Amazon prime I can rent them pretty cheaply (much more cheaply than with on-demand). I didn't understand how it worked at first but once I used it, it was very easy and now I love it.

I know, right?! We bought the blue ray thinking it would work with our older tv- which was a flat screen and what I thought was relatively new-- but nope! We had to wait to buy a tv that was compatible with the blue ray (HDMI features)- it's ridiculous.
This is why we are so torn on Roku 3 or Apple TV with the way electronics change- we'd buy it, shell out 150 bucks, then in a week they'd have Roku 4 out that does 240 extra things the Roku 3  doesn't. With Apple TV- we have iphones and ipads, but the apple ecosystem also changes at the drop of a hat. But like a PP said- not having to deal with a cable company makes it worth it in the long run!!

  • We have Apple TV and we stream Netflix and Hulu plus. We rent movies on iTunes and occasionally buy seasons of TV shows through iTunes as well.

  • We have a Roku and use Netflix on it daily. We also use amazon prime video on there from time to time, but not often. We aren't too big into the latest TV stuff I guess.
