Supplement-milk intolerance

DD has a milk intolerance. We aren't sure if its a protein allergy- her 4 month appointment is Thursday so we will discuss this further then. Being off dairy has made a HuGE impact on DD's belly issues and disposition. I do not believe soy is an issue. With that in mind, I think I need to add a little formula to the mix right now. She's eating more than I can produce and is getting up frequently during the night to eat. If you have a baby with dairy issues, what formula have you been using?

Re: Supplement-milk intolerance

  • I don't use formula but our doctor gave us a sample of the similac. My LO didn't like it. It had a funky smell to it. The sample was of the premixed cans so I'm not sure if the powder would smell different.

  • If you think you're having supply issues, don't supplement.  You need her to nurse nurse nurse to tell your body to produce more.  Just because she's waking often does not mean you're not making enough.  It just means she's waking often!
  • We are having the same issue here. I'm not sure if my LO has a MPI but I've cut out dairy this last week to see if it helps. My pedi said that if we have to use formula to start with Similac for Discomfort which has the purple lid. The milk proteins are partially broken down. She also said that if that upset his stomach that we would need to try Nutrimigen.

  • Thanks ladies for all of your help.
Like botanical said, I'm trying to get her to bf more often to rev up the supply. Until I get to that point, ill check out the purple top if needed.

  • I had been using Alimentum to supplement. She hated it and it was a struggle to get her to take it.  We then tried Nutramagin, and that was even worse. We're at the point now where I'm BF exclusively and don't need to supplement, thank goodness! And she is much happier.

This. I always have issues when DD has a growth spurt but I pump after a feed and bottle feed her what I get. Sometimes this can take 30-40 mins. I continue to power pump as well. Usually my body adapts within a day or two and I start producing more.

Thank you for this advice. DD#1 was a much smaller baby and I never had dairy or supply issues with her. DD#2 is as different as can be! :)
