Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Milk allergy??

My son is 6.5 months old and I'm starting to think he may have a milk allergy.. He has always been formula fed since birth and we went throug such a nightmare trying to find a formula that didn't make him so fussy.. The reasons I feel like he has a milk allergy is because he's literally had a cough since birth, and eczema I've taken him to the doctor so many times I feel like a crazy mom.. For the last 1.5 months he poops 6-8 times a day and its very watery and bright yellow.. I keep taking him to the doctor and he doesn't seem concerned because he's still gaining weight and doesn't have signs of dehydration. He goes through at least 3 outfits a day because of this. I just bought him some enfamil nutrimagen for babies with milk allergies and he hates the taste and won't drink it all. It's very expensive too.. My question is.. Does anyone else's baby have a milk allergy? If so how did u find out that it was a milk allergy and what have you been doing for formula and did baby hate taste?

Re: Milk allergy??

  • Typically with milk allergies they have mucousy bloody stools. We had similar issues with our son. He can only handle Gerber Gentle. It's proteins are partially broken down, but not like with the hypoallergenic ones. On Enfamil and formulas that used whole milk proteins he had similar issues. He gets really gassy and poops weird with any dairy that isn't made with goats milk as well. He also has a sensitivity to corn. So the specialty formulas didn't do so well either since they all use corn syrup as a main ingredient. I don't think it's an allergy since he can handle milk proteins, but a sensitivity to it. Like his tummy just can't handle cows milk that great, but it isn't an allergy or lactose intolerance. So, we stick with Gerber and do goats milk products and limit corn intake and no more yellow mucousy cottage cheese poops 8 times a day. GL!

  • Oh and we switched to Dr. Bronner's for soap and apply Grandma El's to his eczema and it's gone completely. Some day's we'll use CJ's BUTTer for it in between Grandma El's. It's worked great for him and my SO.

  • My DD just got diagnosed with a milk and soy allergy. She actually had no weird poop and didnt act different. Day 10 of introducing formula she started breaking out in hives. She is currently on nutramigen and has a hive every few days.
Did you try warming the water before dumping the powder in? Mine will only drink it warm
  • My little guy didn't have the weird poop thing either.  He just acted like he was having tummy pains, and something I haven't defined that just made me wonder.  He also was not gaining weight.  I was feeding him formula whenever I didn't have enough breastmilk pumped for a full feeding.  As soon as we switched him to a soy formula he started gaining weight.  When he got a bottle of milk based formula around 3ish months (happened twice) he vomited up the entire feeding. So the dr said to treat him as milk allergic for now since allergy testing at this age wasn't accurate enough.

I know now that 40% of kids with milk intolerance/allergy also react to soy -- didn't know that when I switched him to the soy.  In ds's case, we haven't determined as of yet if he is in the 40% since reactions are not consistent so I've been having to keep a food diary with him -- how I determined he was reacting to apples since I didn't notice a reaction when he was first introduced to them.
