What age for theory of mind stuff re: autism

DD's team is working really hard on theory of mind stuff right now. From what I have read typical kids seem to develope it around 3 to 4. I cannot seem to find anything that gives an age for autism. Just that adults with ASD may have issues all their life. Seems like our whole days are spent on exercises for theory of mind lately. Part of me is wondering if we should be devoting entire days to this right now. I understand it is important but we have others issues to work on too. Any tips or advice or insight into what age this should be our major focus?

  • Oh and DD has zero theory of mind right now if that matters. She believes everyone shares exactly her thoughts lol.

Joint attention is the foundation of pragmatics, so we have invested and continue to invest a lot of time and energy there. My kiddo's about a year behind your daughter, though.

  • Thanks for the input and information. I do understand how important it for the social connection with others. She won't be able to be a friend to anyone until she gets there is more to the world than her wants and needs. We will keep working on it. Right now i feel she is memorizing scripts more than anything and that is my concern. " I like so and so. Mommy, what do you like?" Then she will tell what she wants me to like, etc. She has always had great joint attention. She loves people and wants to connect. Her team believes this is the most important thing right now so we will keep at it. IT does make sense this needs to be there before the other social connections can take place.

  • Oh and my DH, who has AS, still doesn't get it always lol. He is shocked when I am cold and he isn't. But how could I possibly be cold, he isn't. How could I possibly be hungry, he isn't, etc.
