Anyone use Hulu? Do you like it/ recomnend it? How long is the wait between tv showing program & Hulu showing it? Looking for ways to cut down on our expenses. Thanks ladies.
I'm a big fan of Hulu. DH and I have a subscription to Hulu Plus, which costs $7.99/month. We get our money's worth as we use it pretty much every night. The benefits of Hulu Plus vs. the free service are: 1) You can stream the content to your TV through a device like a Roku, without having to hook a laptop up to the TV with an HDMI cable - this makes for a much better picture; and 2) Content is available for streaming the next day after it airs on live TV - typically at about 3 am the following day. If you use the free service via their website, you have to wait a week to view new content, and you have to watch it on the computer - or hook the computer up to your TV, as I mentioned.
With both the free and paid services, you have to watch a few ads at various intervals - but it's not nearly as many ads as you're subjected to on live TV. Each commercial break airs about 2 ads.
The selection of shows is great, and it keeps getting better. Most of the major networks like Fox, ABC, NBC, Comedy Central, the CW, MTV, and PBS have their shows on Hulu. (No AMC yet, so no Mad Men. Also, no premium networks like HBO and Showtime. Boo.) A couple of shows we like, like How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory, also appear to be absent from Hulu for now. But the vast majority of our shows are available. Between Hulu Plus and our $7.99/month Netflix streaming account, we don't have a need for cable. We only have the most basic cable service, and only because DH is really good at negotiating and was able to get it free of charge with our internet service from Comcast.
That brings me to another point - if you're looking to cut down on expenses, definitely be sure to haggle with your internet/cable service provider! DH is able to get great deals from Comcast every year by haggling with them - it really is a name your own price industry if you have the patience. I think we're paying $35.99/month for very high speed internet and basic cable, and this is our 3rd year of being a customer. He talked them down from the $70 they wanted to charge us! Definitely give it a shot.
This is what we just did. Got rid of cable and got a roku box. Although I kind of wish we had waited for Apple TV. It's a great alternative to cable and us super cheap! We are currently paying for two channels Hulu and Netflix. We also have amazon prime which allows you to watch a ton of movies and shows. There are a bunch of free subscription channels as well that we downloaded. We got it about a month ago and honestly, I still haven't had the time to go through all the channels and all the options. Do it!
