Christmas Gifts

I don't think this has been discussed yet but correct me if I'm wrong. What are your guy's thoughts on buying Christmas gifts for baby this year? I personally don't think we will because s/he will only be about a month old so it'll be pretty much just buying something for us to use and s/he will most likely be bombarded with gifts from family but does that seem terrible not to buy anything for your baby's first Christmas?

Re: Christmas Gifts

  • I'm sure we'll end up getting him something just because we want to. We'll probably focus more on pictures and stuff like that than actual gifts though.

  • We were planning on getting her a stocking and filling it with a few things from Santa.
  • We have gotten a few small things but that is mainly because DS will wonder why brother has nothing to open.  We don't buy much for Christmas for them anyway, they just don't need it.  Plus family buys all sorts of gifts that they don't need/want and they end up never being used.

  • We plan to get a 1st Christmas ornament, some tether toys and children's books for later. Nothing over the top though. Just enough to get some first Christmas pics.

  • We are buying LO things for Christmas but they aren't really gifts I guess... We ordered a special blanket that DD1 has so we got 1 for LO also we got a plaque that says hayleys room so we plan on wrapping those type of things up so LO has gifts and DD1 doesn't wonder why Santa didn't bring LO anything!
  • We are getting her the family tradition gifts (every year my mom gave us a book and ornament and his mom gave them an ornament and PJ's).  So this year she is getting a book, ornament and a set of Christmas PJ's.  From family members I am requesting things she needs we haven't gotten yet and don't really need to buy before she gets here (like a high chair, since its not like she will be sitting up or eating solids for months..)

  • I'm planning on ordering her a stocking with her name on it. Also I want to start a tradition of reading a Christmas book every Christmas Eve so ill buy her a baby Christmas book even though she won't know it lol. I think every year ill write something in the sleeve so she can look back on them. Maybe a cute Christmas outfit since I'm thinking our Christmas cards will be combined with a birth announcement.
  • We will wrap up a few things- toys puzzles etc that the kids haven't seen. We won't be buying anything. My DS - 18 months- likes to unwrap so that is really the fun. We will say it is from Santa so he starts to get the idea.

  • Only 1st Christmas keepsakes. If DH and I were to buy other things it would be things missing from registry, and let's me honest, those are more for us anyway!
Also, I don't plan on buying a lot if gifts for Christmas even as baby gets older. I can't stand when kids freak out about not getting a lot. So they are going to get used to a little from the beginning!

    this.
  • We may get him a few outfits but there isn't really anything he needs! I just ordered him 2 pairs of custom nike shoes for when he is 9 and 12 months with a gift card from work so ill wrap those up. This little boy is already spoiled and I could not think of anything he needs that he hasn't gotten already! We were very lucky to get everything on our registry with an exception if like 13 little things that were just extra sheets and such.
  • Because we have an older child we will get the baby a few things. While shopping for stuff he needs ive avoided the carseat and stroller toys. I love them and want a small collection so i figured i would go to town for christmas, and the stimulation will be great. And of course theres the traditional 1st ornament, polar express book (a must) and other sentimental firsts.
  • This is our first child and we are just going to have a stocking with diaper bag fillers and probably a Christmas book, or winter book in general. My family will go overboard and she isn't going to remember any of this. I don't feel bad about it. I just can't wait til next year when she'll be chubby and cute walking around on Christmas morning :) I'm really excited to see her fat little legs :) Oh I love babies!!!
  • I wouldn't if he were out first but because we have 2 others I feel like we have to. I plan on wrapping diapers and wipes and stuff like that I need to buy anyway.
  • We will get him something small for DD  to give to him and that's probably it.  I will let DD pick it out.  For DD's first Christmas we only got her maybe 5 things and they were books and one elephant toy and she was nearly 10 mos old.  This Christmas she will be almost 3 and she is  more aware of what is going on, so I want to make sure we include this LO as well.
  • Oooooo what great ideas, ladies! I had forgotten what we did for LO's first Xmas-- but I remember now thanks to this thread. DD was also just a month at Christmas time two years ago. We bought a precious Lenox 1st Xmas ornament and I ordered a stocking with her name on it. I just filled it with little bath squirties, Little People cars, and those little foam books.

For this DD, I'll do the same and probably buy a gift for DD1 from DD2 and vice versa.

This is what our LO will be getting as well, for tradition, plus this is the first baby in my family and everyone has already stated how much they are going to get him/her so there's no need for us to.

We're doing this too! It's a tradition with my family! I can't wait to start it with LO!

  • Since this is #7 if baby doesn't get anything some other little people won't think that's right.  #4 was born 4 days before Christmas and she got onesies, diapers and a sophie the giraffe toy.  This baby will probably get similar stuff.  And all the kids make gifts for each other so he/she will get lots of little things from the sibs.

  • Like a lot of others said, we don't really plan on getting LO gifts for Christmas this year. I would like to get a first Christmas ornament, but other than that I know that our families will go overboard anyway so I'll try to restrain myself from getting anything else (we'll see how well that goes though). I'd rather focus on buying essentials at that point (especially since maternity leave is unpaid for me).
  • I'm probably a little late to this post, but I generally try to limit my bumping on the weekends.  Our EDD is 11/26 so she may only be less than a month old for Christmas.  I want to get her a stocking and an ornament but I'm sure other people will buy her gifts--plus there will probably be bigger ticket items that we didn't receive as gifts that we need to buy "for her".
  • I will get her something, because her sister is 9 and so I feel like I should.  I know my family will be getting her clothes and stuff. I will definitely get her a book and maybe one or two newborn toys.

  • I'm buying a few little things, but it's more for "show" because DS #1 will know something is up if the baby doesn't get anything.  I found some really neat sensory balls at Costco a few weeks ago that I bought.  I'll probably wrap up an outfit or two and some little toys for his stocking.

I like this, I could so ask family to fill in the stuff we haven't gotten yet! Rather than stuff we don't need.
  • i'm not planning on getting her anything.  but thank you for reminding me that I should coordinate a stocking with MIL.  we usually do christmas at their house, so i should see if she had something in mind already.  We are doing our first tree (i've done ornaments on a wreath before for condo living) so i defnitely want to get an ornament from us.  We got first christmas ornaments from a lot of people when we got married, so I know that the mass produced ones are covered.  hmmm, off to look at etsy.
