April 2014 Moms

What are your thoughts...

My family goes on a trip to Yellowstone every 10 years to celebrate my parents' wedding anniversary. This summer is 30 years for them so they are starting to plan the trip because cabins need to be booked by December. Do you think we are crazy to bring a 2-3 month old to Yellowstone? If not, are there hints to make the trip easier?

Re: What are your thoughts...

  • H thinks I'm insane for even thinking about it because it's quite a bit of outdoor activity.

  • Is it super hot? That would bethe only thing I would worry about. 2-3 month olds aren't terrible to travel with, IMO, because they are stationary and not on a strict schedule yet (at least mine wasn't!). I would plan to stick pretty close to the cabin, though.

  • I don't remember it being super hot the last time I went, but that was when I was in high school!

  • As long as you feel like you can be pretty flexible and roll with it I would go.

  • It's easier to travel with a 2-3 month old than a 12 month+ old! I think you can plan to go as long as you will have comfortable and private sleeping accommodations.

  • Ok you ladies are making me feel better! They like to hike a lot so I'm thinking that will be out for us! Kinda crazy to be thinking about life post-baby already.

  • We go on a big trip to the mountains every year - when DD was 5 mo, we were in Breckinridge and this year (16mo) we were in Jackson Hole. We hiked a bunch with DD at both ages -- a good hiking pack is essential (although a 2-3 mo old is probably too small for one...we did see several people with littly bitties hiking with Ergos though!). A 5 month old is a lot different than a 2-3 month old...but we also traveled to Mexico with DD when she was 3 mo and it was also great!

Suffice to say, I don't think you're crazy at all -- we love traveling with DD! you just need to manage expectations -- make sure you'll have a sleeping space away from the rest of your family (your own cabin or at least your own room with space for a PnP) and just realize that plans are always subject to change with an infant. Flexibility is key.

  • We are staying in Jackson Hole so I'm hoping it will be on the cooler side! My parents were already saying on our last trip that "Mrs. S might be married with a kid on the next trip!" Looks like they were right.

  • I don't think it's insane at all. I brought my DS camping when he was about that age. It was probably a lot more fun since sometimes you run out of things to do. The baby keeps you busy. :)

  • I don't think that's crazy. I would buy a good carrier and use that.

Go!!!! We went this past May and the weather was beautiful! Not too hot during the day and cool at night. The hotels at Yellowstone only have fans in the rooms because the weather is so mild there. We opened our window and slept great. It also helped that there are no TVs anywhere. Haha! I think it will be so cool to have your little one with you for this tradition. Go to their website. It's set up more like a resort than a national park. Enjoy!!

If you're staying in JH, it should be lovely temps! We were there for 3 weeks in June - July and it was 70s-80s during the day and 50s-60s in the evenings. And this past summer was supposedly really warm for them. We left 105 degree temps in TX though so 75 felt amazing! Our place didn't have AC and it was fine! YS is hotter on average than JH.

Is your family staying in YS or will y'all all be in JH? I ask bc we thought YS was super close to JH and if turned out much farther of a drive than anticipated -- it took us 3 hours to get from JH to the parking lot at Old Faithful. We saw the geysers (very cool) and decided to leave the rest behind (it is VERY crowded in July). We much preferred Grand Teton NP!!

  • I think it really depends on you, not the baby. If you are flexible and can adapt then I think it's totally doable. Also agree with all the others about baby wearing while you are there!

  • Oh my goodness - do it! Sounds like a blast. Echoing PPs, I'd definitely bring a good carrier or two (perfect for taking baby on hikes) and stay flexible.

We took DS camping with DHs family when he was 4 months old. There were a few stressful moments, but overall, it was a fun and relaxing trip. Enjoy! What a fun tradition :)
  • I believe our cabin is in Jackson Hole. Last time, we were in shorts and sweatshirts. Stupid first-time-mom question... Baby wearing is ok even if baby can't hold up their head?

  • I would definitely do it. Little babies are generally very easy to travel with! You'll have fun.
  • We were just there this July. Jackson can be pretty hot during the day and cold at night. It was high 90s during the day. Also the drive into yellowstone is pretty long from Jackson. Both places aren't too stroller friendly especially in yellowstone. Most of the big places to visit in yellowstone have nice visitor centers close by. We saw lots of babies while we were there including one that looked like it was a few weeks old. It's such a great place...go and have fun! Luckily when they're that small they still sleep a ton:)

Yes! Just make sure you have a carrier where you can hold the baby in facing towards your chest with head support. I know the Ergo makes an infant insert for this purpose and the carrier we have, the Beco Gemini, has a little head piece that pops up to cradle the head. Mobys, etc also work too but I think you'll be much more comfortable hiking with a structured carrier.

  • We took our son at 3 months to Maui from Oahu. We did lots of beach and hiking and just make sure to keep him cool. Now brining a toddler to Yellowstone might be crazy, or anywhere for that matter

  • We took our 2.5 month DD hunting last fall. It was a 7 hour car ride each way and she did awesome. We stayed in a camper which was tiny. We survived and had fun. If you are staying in a cabin I don't see how that would be any different than your house. I say go and have fun!

  • I don't think it's crazy. My family goes to the Outer Banks North Carolina every year. When we go next year, the baby will be 4-5 monthes old and we live about 10 hours away. I say bring the new bundle of joy along on your trip
  • IME leaving the house with a toddler is pretty much crazy and never ends well.
