Parenting after a Loss

Severe Diaper Rash.. suggestions please?

Good Afternoon Ladies.  Have not posted in quite some time. Olivia is almost 11 months old.  A few weeks ago she somehow got thrush.  Pediatrician gave us nayastatin (which I know I'm spelling wrong).  Had to stop it about a day and half early because it gave her terrible diarrhea.. I mean rank.. awful awful diarrhea.  That caused what seemed to be a normal diaper rash.. but very raw and red. So I was doing oatmeal baths and butt paste etc. Nothing touched it.  I took her back to the pediatrician for thrush because it just wasn't gone and she could not tolerate the meds.  So he gave me this gentian violet stuff to try which apparently you do once a week. So I did that once in her mouth last Monday night.  Will do it again this Monday because she still has small sores at the corners of her mouth. He looked at her mouth and her bottom when we were there. Said thrush was not gone but confirmed that no yeast involved in the diaper rash.

Sooo I called them last week. they said I could try the gentian voilet on her bottom too. Tried that in a small 'test' area. Did nothing.  My daycare provider said that her pediatrician recommended maalox mixed with desitin.  So that's the mixture we've started today. So far no improvement but it's only been about an hour or so.

ANy suggestions?  My pedi seems not concerned but I am. It's like nothing touches it!  Initially, it was like a normal raw red rash.. then it turned red and bumpy and moved up to her girl parts. Now it's still sort of bumpy but it's like almost covering her little girl parts and is half way down her bottom.

I am at a complete loss!!

  • That's terrible! You may want to try airing out like PP said. A good rule of thumb is using a try soft towel after each diaper change to pat it all dry.

Use Aquaphor...this sounds crazy but DS1s urologist recommended it after his surgery and it really heals everything.

  • I haven't had to use it, since butt paste cleared up A's antibiotic-related rash, but nurse friends recommended Mylanta mixed with cornstarch and applied with cotton balls .

  • When I had thrush (DS wasn't affected) the LC suggested mixing Monistat with A and D for the diaper area as a proactive way to combat thrush. I can't tell you if it worked because he didn't have a yeast infection rash to begin with. GL!! Thrush is a huge PITA to get rid of.

  • Did you try triple paste?  Not Butt Paste, or desitin.. triple paste!  It's more expensive, but that sh*t is magic!! DS1 had awful diaper rash after being on antibiotics for a while to clear up an ear infection that wouldn't go away.. his butt was so bloody and raw.. they ped put him on antibiotic diaper rash cremes and everything and nothing would help.. my sister kept saying use triple paste, but I figured it was the same as desitin.. finally went out and got some and LITERALLY hours after I applied it, it was already improving!! I now buy it in a JUG through amazon because it's that amazing!! I'm sorry she's going through this.. but, seriously, triple paste worked wonders when we were battling diarrhea/diaper rash from meds!! Hope it helps :)

  • The pedis frequently prescribe an aquaphor-maalox mixture. Diarrhea breaks down the skin incredibly quickly. The maalox neutralizes the acid in the poop and urine. The aquaphor heals the skin and provides a barrier against the moisture. I've never had a rash last longer than 24 hours after a pharmacy tech friend told me about this. Just use a little bowl and slowly stir equal sized spoonfuls of aquaphor and mint maalox together until you have a pearly white paste the consistency of vasoline. Don't try to mix too much together at once or it'll take forever to come together.
  • We've been fighting a mild but raw looking diaper rash in his buttcrack the past 2 weeks - nothing was touching it - not oatmeal bath & air, buttpaste, desitin, A&D etc. my LC suggested it might be yeast, but pedi wasn't sure so didn't prescribe anything.
I picked up a jar of this Wicked Magic Salve and 24 hours later the rash is completely gone

If you do have thrush though and are BF'ing, you need to treat yourself too or you two are just going to pass it back and forth.

  • I don't have anything to add to the ointments list ( we use nystatin and A&D), but you should also look into a probiotic. We have battled yeast (which it sounds like to me) the whole time I have been bfing and the look of a yeast rash makes your knees weak! Culturelle makes a great one for babies and get yourself one too.I always noticed a major improvement after 2 days of probiotics! GL momma, hope it gets better soon!

  • We had the same issue when DD was little.  We went to the Ped and we were given nustatin.  When it didn't help, we got nystatin with steriods. It DESTROYED her butt and made it worse.  We switched to triple paste and the rash went away.  Like PP said, its a little more expensive but it works like a charm on almost every rash we've had since.
