Baby proofing opinion

I'm starting to baby proof things around the house and looking up different things online.

Is a toilet lock really necessary? Some of the baby proofing products are a little much in my opinion but I'm kind of on the fence with that one.

Re: Baby proofing opinion

  • I tend to think the same thing with some of the stuff being a little much. I try to think that if it is lethal, then it needs to be baby proofed. Like toppling furniture, dangerous chemicals, wires, etc. I can see how a baby could fall in a toilet and drown, but he would have to be able to stand/walk first. And then tall enough to fall forwards into it. So it's probably not something that would be needed until later, I don't think, if at all. But I would probably just forgo the lock, and shut the door. Of course, we just moved, and there are boxes and hazards everywhere. Our house is so far from baby proofed right now. Luckily DS is not mobile yet. And when he is, we may not be able to let him out of sight for a while.

  • I never had to have the toilet lock. I too found it excessive and luckily never needed it with my toddler. We did obvious ones like cabinet locks, stair gates, outlet plugs and we put a chain lock on the outside of our bedroom door. So we would just lock it totally instead. Other than that, we moved big furniture or decor items away in storage until she was older.
  • I will probably get the toilet lock but there is a tiny 1/2 bath in the play room. The bathroom door doesn't close very well since its an old house. So it will be a just in case thing
