Job dilemma/vent

I just started a new job about a month ago. It's an office manager position. I like the job. My issue is the pay and benefits. The salary isn't great but I expected that with this field. The benefits are lousy too. The company does not offer any employee a 401(k), life ins, or any benefits like that. The health insurance stinks too. They don't even offer insurance coverage for spouse or children.

I just don't understand how a company expects you to take them seriously and make a career out of it when the compensation isn't even half decent. I have not had many jobs, The previous companies I have worked for have offered great benefit packages. I guess my question is... Do the companies you girls all work for offer benefits like life insurance, 401(k), etc? I think the company I work for now is more of "mom-and-pop" type and I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that. Thoughts?

Re: Job dilemma/vent

  • When I was working, I held jobs in both larger corporate and smaller "mom and pop" stores.  The smaller companies can't afford what the larger ones can.  My insurance and pay both sucked with the mom and pop company.  I will say, however, that I was much happier working there than anywhere else.  It was a trade off I was willing to make at the time.

Personally, if pay wasn't an issue, I'd choose a smaller company every time.

  • If its a smaller mom & pop type company it's likely they can't afford to offer better benefits. It sucks but it costs employers a lot of money to offer benefits and smaller companies generally don't make enough profit to provide better benefits.

  • My office is small, like under 40 people on the payroll. I hear our health insurance is great and my boss picks up 90% of the tab. I don't think the company matches any 401k, but it is offered. All that said, I haven't had a review in years, or a significant raise.

  • I work as a contractor do I don't get any benefits. My DH has. good benefits at his job and the whole big family on his medical plan I think it is about $600 a month for 5 of us...

  • Well I work for our city's public school system, and we have great benefits since it's such a large employer. My H works for the county sheriffs department, which also offers great benefits. Neither of our jobs pay ridiculously high salaries, but honestly to us the benefits are just as important as the pay, and they make up for the fact that we don't make a ton of cash.

  • Some states require employers who have more than a certain number of employees to offer insurance.  Not sure if it applies, but you could always check.  Sorry you are dealing with this!  Maybe you can ask for higher pay since they don't offer insurance?

  • I work for a public university and the pay is low, but benefits are decent.  Our insurance is fairly costly, but better than it would be at a private institution.
  • Thanks for all the info girls! I do like the job but honestly the salary is pretty embarrassing and with the lousy benifits it makes me feel even worse. It just stinks because I'm really looking for somthing to make a career out of. I do have an AA in early childhood, but thats even lower paying! I feel as if I really need to make some serious life decisions and think about going back to college...it seems as if every decent paying job wants a bachelors if not a masters. At this point in my life tho im not ready to give up time with my kids to go to school, idk! Thanks again!
  • I have great benefits through my work, but I work for the City. Since it is the public sector and they have thousands if employees, they are able to offer a good package. We are also unionized.

It is hard for small companies to afford these things.

A note on health insurance... DH and both get some from work but it's not a lot so we decided to purchase our own after LO was born to make she is taken care of. Maybe you could buy something on your own?
