Doing Touristy Stuff with Baby

Next month, my mom is coming to visit. This will only be her 2nd time in CA. She lives in IN. The last time she was here was for my high school graduation and that was a MINUTE ago.

She never travels and probably hasn't been on a non-camping vacation in 20 years. Although we don't have a great relationship, I would like it to be better. We don't fight or argue, we just don't communicate often.

Since she never has the ability to go anywhere, I want to plan to do tourist-y things with her in addition to her hanging out with her granddaughter. I think I can  handle the beach, the park, zoo and the mall pretty well.

I'd also like to do a day trip to LA to see the Walk of Fame and Hollywood sign. DH will probably still be working like crazy, so it will be just the 3 of us. We could be on the road 2-3 hours depending on traffic. I was thinking of bringing a couple pumped bottles and having my mom ride in the back next to dd in case hunger strikes. And, of course, pulling over to change diapers.

DD will be 3 months, Is this a crazy plan?

Re: Doing Touristy Stuff with Baby

  • Not crazy at all.  The best way to get comfortable being out and about is by doing it.  We take our kids all over the place and wouldn't have it any other way.  I get bored at home and can't sit still.  Just plan on having to make lots of stops.  But if your LO is anything like mine have been they will sleep the whole time in the car and if they get fussy crack the window and the white noise will calm them down.  That works like a charm for mine.

    My baby is ONE!!

  • Sounds like a plan! Go for it!!
  • Totally doable. We have done that several times with each LO. Sometimes, you just can't stop or pullover to let LO out and nurse.

  • We used to do 2-3 hours with a 3 month old twice a week when DD1 was little. But i wouldnt give a bottle riding down the road. IMO babies/toddler shouldnt be eating when strapped in becausew if they were to choke you couldnt get them.out fast enouh.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of the possibility of choking in the car seat. We may just pullover. If she needs to eat.

  • It will never be an easier time than now to travel/sightsee with your baby. The older the get the more challenging it is!

    Have fun!

I am still learning this, getting braver with taking baby in public every day.

I am hoping since it's 99% freeway driving she will sleep peacefully the whole way there. She does scream when the car stops though, I hope there's no traffic.
