Went to L and D

Yesterday me an the hubby went to the hospital to get registered for the big day. We also had to watch a video on epidurals since I am going to get one. While there we asked if we could go see l and d. She said it never hurt to go up there and ask. Luckily when we went they were dead and the nurses were just sitting there so they let us back there an showed us all around and the different rooms. The nurses were really nice and said they see me in a few weeks.

Question. When you all went to go register did the hospital get any money for you?? The only money paid was the $200 for the epidural.

  • I meant to say from you not for you...

  • It seems really weird that they had you pay for anything. What if you get there at 9cm and don't even have time to get an epidural? Or end up having a c section?

  • That does seem a little odd to me.  No money was given or asked for up front when I preregistered.  But I guess each hospital does it's own thing.

  • Well when I my cousin went and registered at her hospital they wanted $3,000 up front and if you couldn't pay she said the hospital told her she wouldn't be able to deliver there. Can a hospital do that???
  • I pre-registered online. I find it weird that you gave them money for something you may or may not be able to get.

  • My hospital doesn't require pre registering and that is strange they had you pay for something you might not need.

  • My midwife's office does the preregistration. I've never had to do anything and definitely never had to pay anything upfront. I have insurance, they bill my insurance first and then I'm responsible for whatever it doesn't cover.

  • I know. The paying for the epidural up front is weird but it just the deposit. If you don't pay it and watch the video the hopital won't allow you to have one. I have a piece of paper that is my "proof" I watched the video.

It's always hit and miss if what my cousin tells me is the truth. She said they have insurance but the hopital made them pay up front when they registered. Which I thought was weird but I wasn't going to argue with her. Her husband who is a CPA can't keep a job longer than 2 years. They told him to come to work on Friday business casual and he showed up in shirt shorts and flip flops.
  • No one seems to want any money from us. Course, we haven't been anywhere near L&D nor pre-registered yet, so we probably wouldn't know what they wanted anyway.

It's pretty common here for doctors' offices and now hospitals to require prepayment. People just don't pay their hospital bills so they have to try to get something.

  • Do you have insurance? I'm surprised they would deny you medicine if you want it in labor without prepaying.

Yep I have insurance.  That is why it was only $200 (I guess it is the hospital way of getting some money up front since like pp said there are people out there who do not pay their bills).  Without insurance it was $600.   The doctors office told me on the first appointment that if I wanted the epidural administered during labor I had to go watch the video and pay up front.  So there is no excuse why someone wouldn't know about having to watch the video before hand.  That is just the hospitals policy.  If you do not watch the video and pay the deposit you do not get the epidural. If I had to guess, something must have happened in the past to make the hospital have that policy.  For instance one too many lawsuits??  Policies and rules get put into place for a reason.  I don't know what the cause was for the policy I think its dumb but why fight it??  I'm just glad that is one other thing done in what seems a never ending list....
  • I didn't have to pay anything. I just mailed in the paperwork and that was it!
