Fair warning: Dear Diary post

I just need to get this off my chest since I am super stressed now. Been cleaning and doing baby prep today and noticed that cable and internet went out. Called Verizon and went down to check the Verizon box because it was running on battery power according to the woman on the phone and find 2 freaking inches of water in our basement! It has rained heavily all day and I guess it put too much stress on the sump pump and blew the gfi on the outlet. We use our basement (unfinished) for storage and have tons of boxes down there of course stacked on the floor and not on shelves like smart humans. DH is at work with his phone off so I know he will freak when I tell him and I get the feeling that all the time until baby gets here will be spent dealing with this fiasco.

  • Really not a good situation. Sorry for the stress, definitely not a good time for this nonsense.
  • Call Disaster Cleanup and file a claim to your homeowners insurance. Let them deal with it all.

That really sucks. Anyone who can help you until YH gets home?
One of my friends husband came over and helped me figure out the problem because I was wading around in the water down there completely lost. Now that the sump pump is running I can't really do anything until all the water drains out.

I will have to see if this is covered under our insurance. I know that sometimes water or flood damage requires a clause for which you pay extra. DH got the insurance when we bought the house so I have never seen the policy.

  • There is a possiblity it could be covered under your homeowners insurance. Mechanical breakdown that causes direct, sudden water damage is covered under your typical policy. But obviously you need to check with an insurance adjuster to make sure. I don't recommend you just ask your insurance agent. Agents are great at selling insurance, but they typically don't know jack about how claims are actually adjusted. Place a claim, speak with an actual claims adjuster. IF the loss isn't covered, they will provide written proof from your specific policy. Even if it isn't covered, the insurance company can help you get in contact with a really good water mitigation company in your area. You want to get that water cleaned up right away.
