Re: Pregnant and Pumping iron

  • I am the Marketing Director at a YMCA and usually spend my "lunch hour" working out. I'm already being questioned about taking my baby into consideration but luckily our fitness staff is trained in prenatal and postpartum exercise and I have a wealth of info at my fingertips. I do Les Mills BodyPump and other classes several times a week and will continue to do so as long as it is safe for us.

  • That's awesome @awhitworth926... I'm always amazed at how much backlash is received. Sounds silly, but it reminds me of when Charlotte was too afraid to run once she found she was pregnant even though she was already a runner... Unless a doc prohibits, do what you can to be healthy and happy during your pregnancy!

  • People don't seem to realize that working out and "lifting heavy" (I put in quotes because undoubtedly she is not lifting what she was lifting pre-pregnancy) is perfectly safe and healthy if you are used to doing so!

I have some serious respect for women who continue to work out hardcore through their pregnancy. Obviously, listening to your body/your doctor/your trainer. :)

  • My lifting has definitely declined but I am still trying to do it once a week or so. Now that I am feeling better I will probably go more. It makes me feel strong and I imagine that will only help me in the long run.

  • Dang, she looks amazing! And by amazing I mean healthy and strong and beautiful. :)
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I've been really surprised at the reaction I've received for continuing to stay active. I was weight lifting 5-6 days a week and training for a national rowing competition when I found out I was expecting. I cut back considerably and consulted my Doctor/trainer who said it was perfectly safe for me to compete. You'd be amazed at how negative reactions I've had to that.
Pregnancy isn't the time to start a new work out routine but as long as you listen to your body and scale it back, its perfectly safe.
