Diaper rash help...

Hey ladies. Any advice on how to help heal DS's diaper rash? It's not on his butt, it's all red and irritated on his inner hips... Like the tucks of skin between the thighs and the scrotum. I've been bathing him so it can soak, airing it out a lot and using desitin and cornstarch powder and making sure to change him a lot. It's not getting any better though. I have a call in to the pedi, I'm just waiting to hear back.

Re: Diaper rash help...

  • Could maybe be yeast? My DS had yeast on his butt. We started using 7 day monistat per our pedi. When that didn't help, we got a rx. It's all clear now, but was told by our pedi to use the monistat every now and then.

  • It may be yeast, but if it's just a regular diaper rash, I swear by Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It'll heal overnight what Desitin hasn't been able to touch in a week.

  • I love Butt Paste too for a diaper rash!

  • For a severe rash our pedi recommended mixing your diaper cream with some lanolin. And if it's REALLY BAD adding a small amount of neosporin once a day.

DD had a really bad one and I literally tried every kind that they have out..A&D diaper rash cream, Aquaphor, Desitin (reg & max strength), Triple Paste, Mustela and Butt Paste. Butt Paste was by far the best one. I got the max strength one.
  • The pedi suspects it's yeast, she gave me stuff to do to help and told me to get an anti fungal cream. Thanks for all the advice guys!

  • If its the yeast the cornstarch will make it worse.  Yeast feeds on the sugars in the cornstarch.  Our pedi recommend Lotrimin (like for athletes foot, but a little different one) with clomiterazole (sp?)   A compounding pharmacy also made us some butt paste with antifungal and zinc oxide.

  • May be yeast, but if not, for the worst diaper rashes I have my patients use Calmoseptine cream. It's often behind the pharmacy counter, but doesn't require a script. It helps heal quickly and soothes discomfort. If it's not improving though I would have your pedi check it out to be sure there's not a yeast infection as well.

I second this! Calmoseptine is the best!

Oh! I didn't know about yeast feeding on cornstarch... But, my pedi recommended lotrimin so that's what DH is getting now. :) thanks!

  • I'm another vote for Butt Paste. I use Anointment at every change to keep the rash away - Hunter gets one in that area too. I'm wondering if it's heat rash?
