Dosing with Benadryl

This week, one of my coworkers joked twice about dosing L with benadryl so I could get some more sleep. To me, this is horrifying, but she made it sound so commonplace. A quick google search shows that lots of people think this is okay. Please tell me that y'all aren't dosing your kids and that this isn't really seen as an acceptable parenting process. (The minimum age for children's benadryl for its intended use is 6 btw.)

Re: Dosing with Benadryl

  • I haven't seen too many people on TB condone that practice.  But I've heard some other random moms locally make comments to that effect. I find in Austin there seem to be two kinds of mom groups. The ones who constantly use TV to baby sit their kids (and throw around the benadryl/whiskey comments) and the ones who are really crunchy granola pearl clutchers (omg you gave your baby formula? how could you!?)

  • Nope! My cousin used to do that to her kids when they were younger. Not ok IMO.

  • omg, no. My mom said she used to give me dimatap to make me sleep when she was exhausted, and that then it was considered appropriate!

  • Sadly, I DO know people that have done/do this.
Not nightly, but somewhere between once a week and once a month.
Either because they want to catch up on sleep themselves, or because they want to go out, so they're making it easier for the sitter.

I have never done it, and never will.
MIL says a lot of things, but have never suggested that. Good thing too, because I can forget most per-historic suggestions she makes, but not that.
  • Yeah, no, I'd never do that and would totally side-eye anyone who did.
  • No. We bought some children's Benadryl at one point because DS had an allergic reaction, but our bottle says do not give to a child under 2, and call your doctor for age 2-5. The doctor said not to give it to him, so we won't.
  • I've never dosed my kids with it.  I had a friend who was recommended to use it on her 14 month old by her pedi, but only because he had such bad congestion that he couldn't breathe while napping.  My mom has suggested that I give my kids it when we do our 14-hr drive for Thanksgiving to "make life easier".  There's no way.

  • I wouldn't do it.  Unless medically necessary, and under the strict supervision of a doctor.

And, I'm one of those strange people that benedryl has the opposite effect on.  I don't get sleepy, I get wired.  I also have the same problem with Vick's.. I don't get unstuffed, I get stuffed up.

Yep, me too.  DH refused to believe me until I had to take some after we got married.  During pregnancy, however, it knocks me out.

  • Uh, no.  I don't take sleep aids myself, so I'd never give one to my child.  Ever.
