5 year old shots (or shots for preschoolers/school age kids)

My DD is having her 5 year old shots next week.  I called the nurse this morning to find out which ones.  She is due for 4, plus a flu shot.  (She had the mist last year but was crying as the first spray came in her nose so not sure if we are going to do a shot this time to make sure she gets vx.)

She gets boosters of polio, dtap, mmr, and varicella.

I am very anxious for her because I know how upset she will be.  I am thinking DH will be taking her because she's more nervous with me than him.

I guess there is no point of this message, I don't want to delay them because then she'll be having to go to 2 appointments which will REALLY freak her out.

  • P.S. She needed a throat culture in May and it took 2 nurses to hold her down.  She weighs 38 lbs, lol.  When I say she gets anxious, she really freaks the freak out.

I have no words of advice...those are the worst shots.  I think because at that age they understand what is going to happen and kind of work themselves up for it.  Maybe call and ask the pedi if they have any advice?

My oldest DD sounds like your DD and we have had times where she is hiding behind a chair screaming because they are going to take a finger prick of blood.  Fun times.  She is 10 no so is better but definitely still gets anxious over those things.

I guess the only thing I can say is that the time she was hiding behind the chair screaming, I just told her to calm down because either way we were getting it done.  I didn't get mad at her or threaten her....I just kind of sat there and let her do her thing.  Eventually she calmed herself down and was able to do it.
  • My now almost 10 year old still remembers those shots. I carried him from the office with him screaming, "They're trying to kill me". It took me and two nurses to hold him down. The 5 he got that day does make the flu shot a piece of cake for him now though. Good luck!

  • "The Berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor" is a good book about that.  It talks about why shots are necessary and explains that while they hurt they don't hurt as much as biting your tongue or bumping your shin.  Maybe get her the book and have her go watch you get a flu shot?
  • Ugh, I'm SO sorry!! :( Emily had to have 4 plus Flu at her 4yr as well because she started school before her 5th birthday. Normally she would have half the shots at 4 and the other half at 5. She still remembers them as well and often talks about how much they hurt. :(  I told her she was getting them a few days before the appointment and our Pediatrician went as fast as he could. They were all given in her arm, except flu, which was the mist. It was over quick and now, she doesn't get immunizations until age 11. That is a point I drove home heavily before/during the appointment so she would have something positive to focus on.

    VERY best of luck!!!

  • My daughter just had her 5 year appt and got 2 shots. Our pedi usually does 4 shots at 5 years but since she won't start kindergarten until next year he suggested getting 2 this year and 2 next. She was fine until she saw the needles and freaked out, I ended up holding her down. Not a pleasant experience!
  • DS1 acted like someone had sawn his leg off after his flu shot - he tried to CRAWL out of the room after it happened. This is when he was at least 4. Sigh. He's not a fan, either. Just give her lots of kisses and do something special afterwards.

  • Getting big kid shots are WAY harder than baby shots or even toddler shots. They suck. Take her out for ice cream or something after, it will make both of you feel better, lol.

    Did I mention they suck?

I was going to say, promise a treat for afterwards.  That way she can think about that rather then the shots.
