Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Vaccine effectiveness

At what point do the two month vaccines become "effective"? I know some adult vaccines have a waiting period (flu, malaria, etc) before they start offering full protection. Are the 2 month vaccines the same?

I ask because DH and I have been super careful (read paranoid) about not bringing DS to public/crowded places and now I am dying to bring him out with me.

Re: Vaccine effectiveness

  • I don't know but I never isolated my kids, even the preemies. We're just careful about letting no one touch them when we're out and using hand sanitizer often.

Our oldest goes to daycare and he has to wash his hands immediately when coming home.

    So far, so good.

  • If you want to take him out, take him out. Wear him in a carrier to keep people from touching him. I carry DD around in her car seat and I've never had a problem with strangers touching her.

  • Some are effective within a few days.  Others are not effective until the second, third, and even fourth round.  For instance, the TDAP is one that won't give your baby full effectiveness until around 18 months when they get their fourth round.  So unless you want your kid to live in a bubble until 18 months, go out.  If you are really concerned cover the car seat with a blanket or wear your baby and ask people not touch them.  But, honestly, in the hundreds of times I've taken DS out I've never once had anyone try to touch him ever!  So, IMO, that's really a non-issue.

Plus remember that he is more likely to catch illnesses from you and anyone who comes to your home and spends a lot of time with him, not a stranger you cross paths with at Target.  So get out, have fun!

  • Our doctor said we weren't expected to not leave the house at all for 2 months and to just use common sense when going out. We took LO out very sparingly before he turned 6 weeks then more after. I took him to my sil baby shower at 5 weeks but made sure he stayed with me & in his stroller. You will go crazy if you don't leave your house. Just keep baby close to you
  • I agree with you all that just taking him out is the rational thing to do but we have come this far and shots are only a week away... we do still go out, just not to all the places I want to go. Just a little longer :(
  • Eek... Not 18 months longer though! I guess DH and I will have to find a balance.
