Ergo question

I absolutely loved wearing my daughter in the Ergo and have been waiting until the point where I could wear my son-- I had the infant insert but got rid of it due to lots of issues including baby getting overheated and not seeming to fit correctly into it. At his 2 month appointment this week (almost a month late-- he's a few days away from hitting 3 months) he weighed in at 15lbs 4oz and is 24.5 inches long. He has good head control. Although the Ergo says to wait until 4 months to use without the insert, has anyone used it earlier? He's bigger right now than my daughter was at 7 months!

Re: Ergo question

  • If he has good head control and can sit well on his own, go ahead and use it. If not, just have him sit on a rolled up towel in it.

  • It has to do with weight and head control, not age, so I'd say give it a test run and see how he does! We started DS without the insert pretty early on since he's so big, but for a while we took the little pillow part out and had him sit on it with his legs still in the froggy position instead of sticking out the sides.
  • The insert serves to fill out the carrier so baby doesn't slump and to make sure baby is high enough that the carrier doesn't come higher than the midline of the ear - if he is in a good position in it and it's not higher than his ear that's good.  You also want him to swing freely at the knee - if the bottom of the carrier comes past his knee (or if he is too low) put a folded blanket under his bum.
  • I don't know if this was right or wrong, but I never used the infant insert or a blanket in its place or anything with my DS.  I just wore him legs in when he was a newborn, to give him a little more height in there.  His head did not flop around.

  • I think we first out DS in the Ergo around 7 or 8 weeks. He's a summer baby and it was hot here then, so we never did the infant insert. I just put a folded up receiving blanket at the bottom of the Ergo, and put his legs frogged up in the carter. He also had pretty good head control, and I'd put my hand there as needed.

  • I used mine with my DD at 3 months as well. She was wonderful in it. I think it's fine.

  • I put DD in the ergo w/o the infant insert with her legs inside froggy style as soon as she was over 12lb which was somewhere around 2-3 months. She had great head control and the legs in have her height. The only part that sucked was that her feet would kick out of the bottom when she got excited. It was never a fall hazard but it made me nervous that it might turn I to one. GL
