Nursing Bras vs. Nursing Tanks

FTM here so this may be a stupid question, but do you need both Nursing Bras and Nursing Tanks?!  It seems silly to unsnap a tank and a bra, when I can just unsnap the tank...it has a little built in bra, and i'm practically boobless (STILL!) anyways!  I realize they will grow (hopefully) when milk starts coming in.  Thoughts or suggestions?!

Re: Nursing Bras vs. Nursing Tanks

  • I wear tanks someday and bras other days. Wearing both might be necessary for larger breasted women.

Well. I have huge boobs and was a size F nursing, so I needed both. But if you have small boobs and don't need a bra, then sure. It's whatever floats your boat.

For easier nursing though, I recommend layers in general. They are your friend when trying to remain discrete. So I would at least always have on a stretchy camisole or nursing tank underneath your regular shirt.
  • I have three nursing tanks from target a month or two ago when they were on sale for underneath regular shirts, so I got that covered.  Just debating if I even want to spend money on a nursing bra...

  • I used both, just not at the same time. Never used them both at the same time and I have size D/DD boobs. I would pick up a couple nursing bras just so you can have both. Some days I didnt want to wear the tank tops under my t-shirts so the bras works better.

Also to add my boobs really didnt grow that much after my milk came in. It doesnt mean anything. I was still able to feed my baby just fine. Some women just dont get that big while BFing.

    Good luck

This. I have size E while nursing. I mostly wear tanks at home since they don't give as flattering support as a real nursing bra.

I would suggest also making yourself some undercover mamas. It's a tank top that you alter so it loops over your nursing clips. Takes like 10 minutes to make and you can use super cheap Forever 21 tanks. https://thejensonjaunts.blogspot.com/2011/07/thrifty-fun-diy-make-your-own-nursing.html

  • I got both to have different options. 2 Bravado seamless and 2 Bravado sleepers bras (40% off sale from Gap thanks to a fellow bumpie!) and then 2 Gilligan and O'Malley nursing tanks with Target GC.

I know I'll need more but that is my starting stash. FWIW I think the Bravado stuff is cut SUPER small... I have worlds tiniest boobs and debating getting a size up next time...

  • I bought 2 nursing tanks and 2 nursing sleep bras since those come in S,M,L sizes. I'll eventually buy actual nursing bras, but not until I figure out what size I'll need. I plan to just be in tanks and sleep bras while on maternity leave.

  • I used the tanks while home and then used the bras when I went back to work and had to pump several times a day.

  • I picked up a couple of nursing tanks from Target and plan on getting a few nursing bras after baby gets here. Not sure what size I will need and I'm small chested anyways so the tanks will have to do the trick for the time being.
  • Like PP, I like to have a few of both. I see using the tanks as more "lounge wear" and the bras for when I go out and about, or just want to feel more put together. Eventually with DS, I transitioned to just bras with layered camisoles and tops, but I still used the tanks for night nursing. I liked that they gave me somewhere to put a nursing pad at night while his sleep schedule adjusted.

I've always had a bigger chest, though, and I rarely like to go braless, even at home. I like the support.
