I don't understand Apple product mania

I really can't believe this story - some people in California hired homeless men to stand in line for a new iPhone and then refused to pay them for standing in line when the store sold out....this can't be happening.

 

It is a phone - you don't have to have it the first day it is available for sale.  Nor do you have to have it ever - I don't own any Apple products and I have survived. 

 

Can anyone explain the iPhone insanity to me?

    DH was on line at 4am. He's been an Apple fanboy since high school. I can't fully explain his madness, but he sure does love it something fierce.

    I think the people who do that are early adopters in general. Meaning they also want to be first in line for any new technology.  I love my Apple products and I'm not going to stand in line for hours to get the newest one but I don't care if other people do.

    The 5c is exactly the same as iphone 5, except with a colorful plastic casing and SLIGHTLY better battery....and apparently the facetime camera is better too, but I dont use it anyway so meh.

    5s is the true (and more expensive) upgrade, with a new chip plus the new fingerprint thingy and also the first 64bit phone.... but seeing as I never get the "newest and best" phone because I'm not interested in spending the extra money to do so, I'm not following the hype.

    Since I was due for an upgrade though, last week I went and got the regular iphone 5 because I frankly think it's better quality than the 5c, which is replacing it.  Same price ($99) and Verizon was doing a deal where you can trade in your old iphone for $100 so I took advantage of that...still had to spend money on the taxes, godforsaken upgrade fee and a new case and all that rigamaroll, but ....eh...not bad.

    And I must admit, at first I was a little allured with the new fancy colors on the 5c and thought about waiting until that was released...until I took a moment to think logically and realized I'd probably cover it with a case anyway.

    Further... I'm having much more fun playing with the new iOS 7 software than anything else... Still haven't 100% decided if I love it, but it's new and fun to play with at least

    FINALLY, new alert/ring tones and wallpapers! hahaha

    My DH stood in line from 2am to 2pm to get te 4 I think. I don't get it. I guess if you order online you don't get it for a couple weeks.

    Also is it IN line or ON line??

    I have an Ipod. It's a 2nd gen nano from like 2008. My dad won it with airline points. That is the extent of my apple involvement.
    Other than that, I can't afford apple things and I definitely wouldn't wait in line.

    I don't know ... I think it's something people do for the experience of it. Like shopping on Black Friday, going to Times Square on New Year's Eve, or seeing Batman at midnight on the day it comes out.

    I avoid all of that stuff but we all have our things.

    I got the 5c today but waited in no lines and wouldn't have been willing to.  My 4 was maxed out and the camera lens has been scratched for a long time so I couldn't take pictures of videos of the boys so it was time for a new one.  Personally, I think the 5c colors are ugly as all fuck and I really just wanted the white one but they were sold out.  I took the blue and it's now 99.9% covered with a white case :-p

    @Libby1978 Since the 5s and 5c are replacing the 5, you're going to be hard pressed to find a 5 anywhere.  I would have been find with a 5 but couldn't even find one.

    Haha yeah. It's the 5c. I woke up at 2am this morning to order the 5s so I was going to be pissed if I could have preordered :P
    Ahhh. I JUST got an IPhone 4 last year, so I know very little about them.
