When do they start actually swallowing oatmeal?

We are on day 6 of oatmeal. While he seems to like it and opens for more he just stuffs it in his cheeks like a chipmunk.

I get that this is more or less practise before we get to real food just wondering if he should have mastered this yet or not?

  • We just started oatmeal, too, and I keep convincing myself that at least a little bit is being swallowed. Whether or not that is the case, though... I'm not sure :)  I know an awful lot of it is being spit back out... and he thinks it is completely hilarious.

  • Im sure glad I started with this instead of taking the time to puree food for him to practise on!! Although I am wasting a crap ton of BM.

  • An old friend told me you have to aim for the roof of the mouth. How true that is I don't know. She says they suck it from there. Makes sense I guess because the nipple goes there in BFing

  • C swallows... He loves to eat. We've been doing it for 2 weeks or so.. It took him about a week to figure it out.
  • It took my Lo a couple weeks to get the hang of it..I can only do a little bit at a time otherwise it goes everywhere..it still does though haha.
  • We have tried oatmeal two times and LO just spits it all back out, so I think she is not ready yet. What did you do with your LO? Did you keep trying everyday until they got the hang of it?

  • I waiting a few days(the first time he screamed) haha. Then just kept trying a little bit by bit. Started with runnier 1 TBSP and then gradually worked our way up to 2 TBSP and thicker like oatmeal.  It took about two weeks until he really got the hang of it and now loves it.
  • Depends on the kid. DS has reflux and I knew he was ready for solids when he started actively swallowing his Nexium/milk mixture, rather than me dribbling it in his gaping, crying mouth. He wasn't even 4 months yet.

We started oatmeal right at 4 months and made it very watery/milky to start and he was swallowing it.

  • Cavin had no problem learning to eat.  I would skip the nasty cereal and make or buy some real food.   I did make regular oatmeal then stuck it in the food processor to make it smooth.  Instead of adding breast milk I added fruit to it.  He loved it.  we skip the cereal all together and he now eats fruit and vegies for dinner.  I process it but not so much that it is "liquid" but just enough he will not choke on it.  He loves to eat.  My husband said he got that from his side, we may not know how to do much but we do know how to eat.    :)
I agree with others, aim for the roof of their mouth.  I rub the spoon on his top gum as I pull it out which puts it on the roof of his mouth or his tongue.

  • I read if they are still thrusting it out with their tongue leave it be and try again in a couple weeks. They have to get past that tongue-thrust reflex before they are really ready to eat solids. That being said, we haven't tried yet.

  • I agree with PP who said you have to aim for the roof of their mouth. We've been spoon feeding cereal for 2 weeks and this works!

He doesnt thrust it out, he stores it in his cheeks like a chipmunk.
