SAHMs please come in...

So the post made by @IamInigoMontoya got me thinking and I figured I could get some insight from other SAHMs here as to what an example of your daily schedule looks like.

My son is 8 1/2 months old and I seem to be struggling with finding different age appropriate outings/activities to keep him engaged while working around naptimes and feedings so that he doesnt get cranky or overstimulated. Im finding that most of the time when we dont leave the house at all, he gets bored and cabin feverish (as do I), but if we're running around too much he's cranky and overtired.

So can I see an example of some your schedules? Maybe that will give me some ideas to get us up and out of the house for a bit to break up the day! TIA. :-)

Yeah, I don't know if anyone remembers "hayjamie" or however she spelled her name, but she has almost the same writing style, if you want to call it that.
  • @MrsT0514   When DD was 8 months old, we didn't really leave the house much either. She couldn't do much besides play toys or play in her exersaucer :)
We went for lots of walks with her in the stroller. I took her in the backyard and laid her on a blanket to play (or in the grass). It just provided a change of scenery, which was good for both of us. Take him places in the stroller that you need to go, or just go to a park and walk on a walking trail. I'd pick ONE place to go in the morning between breakfast and lunch. We would take a short walk then nap (DD was taking two naps still at that age). Lunch, another walk/errand, nap. Play in between if we were home.

  • We don't have a set schedule, but we plan at least one outing in the morning to the Y, the park, a cafe, story time, shopping/errands, etc. If there is time we'll do another short errand after her nap.

Around 3pm DD plays by herself or watches TV so I can do chores and get dinner going. By 5 everything is done and we chill together until DH finishes work and we have dinner together. He usually does bath and bedtime most nights.

  • Are you able to get outside much? I found both my babies love being outside, even sitting in an exersaucer or on a blanket. We are far from having a schedule because life is hectic with my H working oot. With the younger one we do seem to fall into patterns of sleep, eat, play. DD was eat, sleep play. Recognizing this helps you pick up on their sleep cues because an over tired baby is nobodies friend. Sensory stuff at that age is great too, let them go to town in some macaroni or rice.

  • I wish we had a schedule! We never really have though.  I'm just not that kind of person.  When she was taking several naps a day, that was kinda a schedule, but nothing is ever set in stone.

Now that my LO is in pre-school we do have a bit of a schedule on those days, but everything else is loosey goosey.

One thing I do attempt to make happen is at least one outing every single day.  Rarely do we spend a whole day at home.

  • Right now things have gone to shit since Cade is sick. However, we don't have a schedule really. We do lots of different things though. Typically we try to have as much floor time as possible. We'll mix in some simple sensory activities as well. Things like I have a basket filled with different types of balls that he plays with. Each has a different texture, size, ect. I have a wipes box filled with squares of fabric. Things like that. Things Daddy can easily do as well. I'll take him shopping with me to get him used to going out. I always wear him. We go to the farmers market and Cantral Market once a week. Walks in the local trails are also good as well.

Other than that we have things set up for 2 meals and snack each day. Feed on demand with bottles. We still give him time in the walker while I do my daily dishes. Oh and soon we'll be starting a mommy and me swimming class! That's all I got. We have Rosie as well so we try to get her involved as well, but we're focusing on other skills like playing nicely and socializing.

  • That was a tough age. 2 naps and trying to juggle a life outside of the 4 walls of your house. Keep at it, soon enough he'll drop to one nap and it'll free up your mornings. Dd is slightly younger and it's SO much easier with her, bc she goes with the flow and will cat nap wherever we are and takes a long afternoon nap. Our schedule still revolves around Ds bc he's my more needy kid, God love him. I seriously revamped my résumé when Ds was that age, I didn't think I could handle being a sah mom!

  • Thanks for all of the ideas! So I guess it sounds like I'm on track for where DS is at developmentally right now. DH put up a swing in the backyard so I try to get DS outside daily for either a walk, to sit and chill with some toys/play in the grass, or the swing.

Right now he sleeps until 8am and goes down for his first nap about 10-10:30ish. That nap is usually only about 45-50minutes long so it doesn't give me much time. Lately he's been also taking an early afternoon nap which is around an hour to 2 hours max, and sometimes even a late afternoon cat nap in addition, so time management has been a bit challenging!

I really just want to make sure I'm engaging him enough but not overstimulating him either.

  • We've never really had a set schedule. Around that age, we stood indoors a lot, too, since really going out was just him being in the stroller.

This is my thought process too. Going out can be a hassle bc it feels like all om doing is juggling him from carseat to cart or stroller.

  • @nana_osaki06 Some of those sensory games I actually just came across on a blog I found today. They're pretty neat! I'll have to try some of them.

Just today, I actually just got a big bowl of water and took it outside with us. DS splashed around in the water for a bit and loved it!

  • @lgoo0304 thanks for your reply in the dup post. I can definitely relate to that, as MH works long hours as well. So it can be difficult to factor him in..and naturally most of the parenting duties fall on me bc of his schedule. Which makes dinner time especially challenging at times, considering that's the time of day DS seems to need constant attention.

We did an outing in the mornings- example

    7 up for the day
Eat breakfast, some playing, get ready
Sometime around 9 leave for the store, park, aquarium, play date

    Home for lunch

    Nap

Up and get into stroller for about a 45 to 60 min walk with the dog

    Home, play

    Dinner

    Play

    Bath, bedtime

Honestly he's nearly 3 and I'm back to work but our weekends or vaca days still very much look like this!!
  • My twins are 9.5 months, but roughly the same age as your LO on their adjusted scale.

Most mornings they are up around 7, and have a 6 oz bottle. Then I dress them and put them in the Super Yard to play while I get the big kids ready. Around 8:15 or so, we do breakfast and then they sit in their highchairs and we "sing" to the radio while I unload and reload the dishwasher.

After that, I put them on the floor, and we all "play" together. This usually involves preventing Aubrey from pulling Avery's hair, and general refereeing of stolen toys. Around 9:30 or so they go down for a nap, and usually sleep for about 2 hours. This is whenI try to send reports in to my boss, or, poop by myself :)

When they get up they have another bottle, and then we try for outside time. I put them in the super yard while I run out and lay down a blanket and put some buckets and link a doos out for them. We "play" outside for about 30 minutes, and then do lunch around 12:30.

After lunch, I really win MOTY because I put them in their excersaucers for 30 minutes in front of the TV. They watch one of the music channels and babble while I just breathe for a few minutes. This part of our day is usually the roughest for me. I am up between 5:30 and 6, and I am usually exhausted at this the.

After TV time, it is usually around 2:00, and time for their short nap. They are usually up again around 3-3:15. We have a snack, and now we go get the big kids off of the bus.

When the bigs come home, I help with homework so the babies are sort of left to their own devices. Back to baby jail for them. Aubrey usually spends this time yelling "Bububub" to her brother, and Avery practices standing.

I also prep dinner during this time, if I haven't already. DH typically gets home between 5-5:30, if he doesn't have to work late. Which right now he does, for the next month :( If he is home, he finishes making dinner while I feed the babies. Bath for the babies is usually around 6:-6:30, over always by 7. Then we do jammies, bottle, and bed. Then the real fun of picking up and laundry begins :)

That was really freaking long. Holy crap, all my sorries!

  • @s0ulchicken No shame here with TV time! My kid loooves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse! Honestly, its nice to have a small chunk of time that he's entertained without me having to be right there in his face entertaining him.

But...lately, IDK if its teething, growth spurt, whatever...nothing seems to keep him happy for very long. What a lovely phase we're going through here!

You are so right. I am actually thinking about joining some kind of mommy and me class to shake things up some, but don't know how to do it with both babies?

And really, teething and colds just take "schedules" and throw them to the wind.

FFFC? Most days, I am pretty sure I'm just winging this whole SAHM gig. Someone will out me as a faker soon!

  • when school started my whole schedule got thrown.  now the big kids wake up at 6ish, DH or i give them breakfast and then they do their "chores" (get dressed, brush teeth, make bed and put clothes in hamper).  while the big kids are doing their chores, i feed the baby and get her ready for the day.  once the chores are done, i put DD2 in the exersaucer and let DD1 and DS watch some tv while i shower and get ready.  we leave the house at 8:40 to walk DD1 to school.  tues and thurs we walk DS to nursery school right after we drop off DD1.  DD2 takes a nap when we get home and if it's not a nursery school day, DS and i will play outside if it's nice or color if it's crappy out.  when DD2 wakes up we have some playtime.  11:30 is pick up for nursery school, then we come home, eat lunch and naps for everyone.  i try to do laundry at this time and light cleaning.  3pm we have to leave to go pick up DD1.  come home, play outside and then everyone has a meltdown while i am trying to get dinner ready.  DH comes home anywhere between 5:30-6:30, then it's dinner, and we start the bedtime routine.  kids are in bed by 7:30 and hopefully sleeping by 8.

And believe you me..I'm wingin this shit too. For real. Lol.

  • @IamInigoMontoya I'd love to get DS into a music class (like Kindermusik or somethinfg like that), but any of them around here ate pretty much 18 months and up for the age group. So its tough..we're right in the "in-between age group" for lack of a better term.
