Daycare vent

Sorry in advance if this is long....

My DD is 3 months old and just started daycare 2 weeks ago. I am a FTM, so I've never dealt with sickness in babies before and am probably over paranoid. When I picked her up from daycare yesterday, I asked how her day was - they said she was fine. She was dry when I picked her up and she had only eaten 3 out of her 4 bottles (which has happened a couple times), so I thought she was fine. She ate twice once we got home and she wasn't fussy, but she did not have a wet diaper yesterday evening. I was starting to get worried but decided I would wait and see what her middle of the night diaper was like, thinking it would be really heavy. It wasn't, she had hardly peed. She woke up this morning soaked from a runny (poopy) diaper, but she ate fine and was smiling and cooing. Then, she projectile puked all over herself on our way to daycare, so I turned around and went back home to get her changed and calmed down. When I finally got to daycare, the lady asked me if I had a rough night. I said kind of, and a rough morning. She then proceeded to tell me "Well she had 4 runny diapers yesterday, and a couple other babies are sick with what we think might be rotavirus". They FORGOT to tell me about her diapers. Seriously? I even asked how she was. Then she said "I'm going to push the pedialyte today" - I said no, give her the milk (I EBF), until I can talk to her doctor. She repeated again that she was going to push the pedialyte, and I again told her to wait until I could talk to the doctor. I am picking her up from daycare shortly to take her to the doctor per their request.

I'm sorry this is so long, I just had to vent. I feel like DCP was questioning my judgement by saying no to pedialyte. The nurse confirmed I made the right decision because they don't recommend too much of it for babies this age.

Re: Daycare vent

  • Was one of her normal teachers there when you picked her up yesterday? Or was it an end of the day floater? If it was her normal teacher, it's pretty bad that they didn't mention anything about her diapers. Was anything written on her daily sheet?

  • It was her normal teachers that are there all day. We don't normally get a sheet at the end of the day, I just ask how she was. They did write it down on a sheet yesterday but forgot to give it to me. They have been great otherwise so far so I'm hoping this is a one time deal.
  • So, I don't love the way they handled it.  The diapers I could see as them forgetting but always stand strong if they want to do something you don't agree with.  That said, I'm surprised you took her to daycare and I'm really surprised they let her come.  4 runny diapers, plus one at home PLUS vomiting?  That baby really needed to stay home.

  • @elmoali I agree, I should have taken her back home right away once I found out about yesterday's diapers. I couldn't get her in to the doctor for 2 hours and I live 25 minutes away from work and daycare. We are home now though!
  • aww :(. I feel your pain.  My baby was 5 months old and had a 24 hour stomach virus with a 103 fever.  She was sick right after i picked her up from the daycare, so I called right away to ask if anyone else was sick, and they told me "no, i have no idea where should could have gotten sick from".  I kept her home the next day,  her fever broke by the morning, but i cant help but think the daycare was lying to me.
    It's not easy.
  • Few things-one they cannot tell you specifics about other kids. but your child's BM's should have been marked and if there is 3 or more 'diarrhea' diapers then kid should have been sent home sick. Two- if something is off with your kid and then they puke, why would you bring them to school? Our policy is 24hrs vomiting free. Three- i wouldn't have left my daughter with something that said they were going to give a her anything i didn't okay. Especially under 6 months of age!! Anything that our center gives LO, they have to have written permission to do so (food, juice, water, sunblock, etc)
  • My DCP would have called and probably had me come get DD for that many runny diapers, especially if other children have similar symptoms. DCP can and should inform parents about confirmed cases of contagious illnesses without identifying particular children.

  • I used to work at a daycare every summer when I was in college and home for the summer., I am very surprised that you do not get a sheet at the end of the day.  For babies under one year of age we always had to right down everything.  I'm really surprised they didn't mention the runny diapers.  You have to trust your gut but if you're not comfortable then I would switch daycares.

  • I am going to ask about the daily sheet next week. Honestly, I know I should have just kept her home to begin with and I feel stupid that I didn't. Lesson learned for sure. I'm just glad that the doctor has seen her and we are home now. There aren't a lot of choices for daycares where I live (small town). This is the only center and all of the in-homes I called when I was pregnant were full. They otherwise have a really good reputation, but I am going to talk to them next week about why I wasn't called yesterday. Thanks everyone for your responses.
  • eh-I don't see anything wrong here. People forget things, including me especially by end of day. I can see how you would be irritated but it's not a bid deal IMO. Also, I agree with the teacher about giving pedialyte. You voiced your concern and the teacher can wait until you give her the go ahead.

  • Well, people do sometimes forget to tell people things when they have a lot going on, if they had four babies that they think have rotavirus they were probably quite stressed... but my question is WHY didn't they make you bring that baby home yesterday?!?  Especially if they suspect rotavirus?!  Your baby and every other baby with symptoms should have been out of there!  Where the other babies there too?  She never even should have suggested the pedialyte because you should have been on the road back home.  That is what I'd be uncomfortable with, that they don't seem to be sending sick kids home.  I don't think you did anything wrong, you didn't have all the information.

I'm not saying that they daycare *wasn't* lying about it, but I don't know why they would lie about something like that.  There might have been kids that were sick but they didn't know about it, perhaps over the weekend or something.  Also, other parents are pretty good at drugging up their kids and bringing them in to daycare when they should be home, which is another reason it could have happened.  The kid pukes all night but mom can't miss work so it's Tylenol in the morning... and then off to daycare to infect everyone including the teacher. It's hard for everyone.

  • Do they not write down the diaper changes and what they were?  We get a daily sheet that has the time a diaper is changed and if it's "BM" or "W."  Also, 2 runny BM diapers in one day and they call us to take LO home until we see a Dr and get the ok to go back, or we have 24 hours without a runny diaper.

We were only suggested pedialyte once by the doctor, and that was only as a last resort and we ended up not even needing it. I'd be looking for a new DCP after that.

Um, no. You do not give an EBF four month old pedialyte.  I would pull my LO from daycare ifa  provider insisted on giving her sugary liquid that she doesn't need and that is not at all healthy for an infant of that age to have.
My daughter had rotavirus when she was 5 months old and was EBF, the ER suggested pedialyte as well. She wouldn't touch it. But my pedi agreed that it was fine to give to her.

  • My daycare provided daily sheets and communicated if DD was even as a little more fussy than normal.  So I would not be OK with them "forgetting" to tell you about 4 runny diapers or other signs of illness.  Especially if there was a cumminicable virus going around!  THey don't have to tell you which children were sick but they sure could, and SHOULD, tell all parents when a communucable disease has been diagnosed in a child that has been in contact with the other DC children, so that parents can be on the look out for their own LOs.

This place sounds disorganized.  I'd look elsewhere.

I would not use a daycare that pushed pedialyte for an infant. It is not their place to make that call. They should only be providing what the parents provide.

Forget the pedialyte - I wouldn't keep my infant in a daycare that accepted a child who was having diarrhea and vomiting that day. Seriously, WTF?
