Government shut down

My DH works for the federal government and said they may get shut down oct. 1st if some bill doesn't get passed- I'm already on bed rest so not making 100% of my pay- he said if they get shut down he can't even get his pto/va so he just flat out brings home zero money! Anyone else having to worry about this? Anyone got some inside info on the likely hood of this happening or have an idea on how long it could last? Thanks! Trying not to panic too much till I know if it will happen or n

  • I also work for the Fed Gov't. It's all a bunch of smoke and mirrors, IMO. We could get shut down for a day or two, but the last time that happened we got back pay.

  • Don't take this bitchy. Apparently I am being pissy when I don't mean to be and auto correct is not being my friend.

This seems like a yearly occurrence with some Gov jobs. They will not let your DH take his PTO/VA? Really? I am so sorry. That just adds more stress. DH also works for the government and we hear this every year starting around this time. DH actually even carries the max credit hours you can work because of this. I know every Gov office is different though. DH gets hit with threats of "you need to work but no pay for X time to keep the office open". I think it is a max of 3 weeks total. Yes, the Gov can do that when you work for them. Although his area will allow you to use your vacation pay, sick pay, and credit hours to "pay" yourself during that time.

I think the threats of this become more serious around Christmas and in January. It lessens and they work it all out by Feb/March. It has been that way for the 4 years he has worked for the government. As of yet, he has never had to work "without pay". Keeping fingers crossed that this year is not the first time it happens.

I hope it doesn't happen to your family. Sometimes working for the Gov has some serious draw backs that no one knows about.

  • I just got off being furloughed, so I've already missed two weeks of pay...Ugh. they go through this every year...and threaten shut down every year. I'm not too concerned. However, my husband and I are both federal workers so we'd be screwed, add should a lot of my co-workers, if it really did happen. On a bright side, last time this happened, they gave everyone back pay once the budget/CRA was in place.

Yep, every year because they can never decide on a budget. I am sure some years it is more of a threat than others. I am also sure the stress level depends on how much your boss is stressing about it.

  • It'll be ok. I'm a federal employee and they've done this almost every year for the past few years. They'll pass a continuing resolution and keep scraping by. I'm on unpaid maternity leave anyway so it won't affect me but I don't think you have to worry that much.

  • My DH is also military and facing not getting paid or funding for work. This has happened for the past several years because the government cannot seem to pass a budget anymore. It always works out at the last minute.

Ugh, I am so over this obsession to defund the ACA. The House passed it, the Senate passed it, the SC ruled it constitutional. LET IT GO!
No kidding.  ACA is the only reason I have any prenatal stuff covered at all right now.  (Self-employed, self-insured.  Yeah, it sucks.)
