fix and train your dogs people!

Once again I am entirely too nice.

Our friends went out of town for the weekend and asked if we could watch their dog. We agreed because we've known the pup since they brought him home in April and he gets along well with our dogs. He's an 8 month old pitbull/golden retriever mix who weighs about 60lbs and isn't neutered (spelling?).

Um. What. The. Fuck. Over.

This dog is a spaz. I own a pitbull and have owned retrievers, so the energy level isn't the issue. My pitbull is 4 y/o and doesn't have an off button. The total lack of training is the issue. I tried to take into consideration that he's in a new environment with people he isn't use to... But. Wow.

I go to let him outside to go potty and he runs out the door. Thankfully he does come when called, but he's cowering and peeing the whole time he does. I hook him on the cable. Go back out 10 minutes later to get him and he jumps on me, scratches the shit out of my arms, doesn't listen to a firm "DOWN" or to me redirecting his jumps with me knee/body. He slips his collar. He doesn't run off, but rather than letting me put his collar back on to lead him into the house, he rolls over on his back and pees all over AGAIN. I ask him to "sit" and try to get him to sit. He grips my arm with him legs and pees some more... Uh really?

Get him into the house and he's just pacing and panting and going all over. I realize a lot of this is anxiety (new place and new people). But he acts like this at home too and they think its fine. He's having quiet time in his crate right now. Just that one scenario has me exhausted.

I think this weekend is going to be a training opportunity... that will be wasted once he goes back home. Thankfully my dogs aren't being affected by his behavior.

Moral of the story. Train and say/neuter your pets! Especially your big dogs!

Re: fix and train your dogs people!

  • He's very confused. I'm trying to ignore or correct unwanted behaviors, depending on what it is. He has no idea how to walk on a leash and thinks tension on the leash (from barging forward) is me being mean and he rolls over and pees. All he does is pee. I'm very sure that his owners have a more physical approach to handling him and that, that's half the issue. Rather than correcting bad behavior, he gets hit. Its making it very difficult to correct him and handle him because he pees.

Sad part is, he's smart. He caught on quick to "out of the kitchen" and waited patiently for me to call him to come eat (I make my dogs stay out of the kitchen when preparing their meals, and call them one at a time to come eat)...

I might try taking him for a walk tomorrow to get some energy out and see f that helps.

  • Good Luck!!!  Poorly behaved pets make me stabby.  Not because of the pets but because of their owners.  My neighbors all fall into that camp and it drives me BSC.

  • That poor pup sounds awfully confused.  My dog may not be the best trained dog and I'll be the first to admit she's a spazz, but she knows the basics and it wasn't that hard to do.  People are lazy, I see it at the dog park all the time, it drives me bonkers.
I agree.  I have 3 big dogs and they're all spazzy but they will stay down, sit, stay etc. because we taught them when they were little.  And they're all fixed, no excuse for that!
  • He's better today. He slept in his crate last night (he does at home as will). This morning I let him and besides some excitement from being in a crate all night, he didn't jump. Let him out to go potty and did our normal morning routine for my dogs.

He seems kind of confused as to why he isn't getting attention for DEMANDING it (leaning against me, jumping, pawing at me, invading my space, licking me). He's learning that he can lay down on the floor or in his crate and that its ok to not constantly be ttouching me or one of my dogs. My dogs have, thankfully been patient with his crazy puppy behavior. My pitbull (a spayed female) has also been good about ignoring his annoying unneutured male behavior towards her. Its going to be a long weekend.

  • I have a male pitbull who is fixed. I don't think you can do it prior to 6 months. They have to be 6 months or older. He is still pretty hyper with being fixed and attending classes. As long as he gets a good walk or run in he's okay. Bringing a baby home is going to be interesting with him.
  • uncontrolled bladder is common with Golden Retriever , I have a two year old golden which happens when she gets excited or scolded and she is spayed. We have to let her outside to pee whenever we get home first then greet her. It's not that the dog is not housebroken with this breed it just happens with certain dogs. The dog has obvious training issues but the peeing thing isn't his fault.

I totally agree. People are so excited to get a dog but they don't realize the time and responsibility that goes into owning a dog. We got our puppy on New Years when he was 8 weeks old and started training him right away. It took a lot of work and some sleepless nights but now, ten months later, we have a dog that we can take to the dog park without having to worry about his behavior. Obviously he is still hyper because he's still a puppy but we take him to the dog park for a couple hours at least every other day (we don't have a good yard for him to stay in). It's comforting to know that when I'm at the hospital, I don't have to worry about our dog sitter because I know our Moose will be well behaved. I can't stand it when people expect their dog to listen but haven't spent any time training him/her. It's not fair to the dog either. I'm sorry to have to deal with this! Be careful and good luck!

This may be part of the issue, but I think most of it is being disciplined in a rough manner. The reason I think this, is because all I have to do is ask him to sit and he will crouch down or roll over and pee. Its a very submissive behavior.

You can definitely do t before 6 months. I've gotten puppies fixed at 12 weeks old and the vet offered to do it at 8 weeks. Personally I think the sooner the better. That way they don't learn the "gender rolls" associated with hitting maturity (a female coming into heat or a male starting to wonder what his parts are for).

I couldn't disagree more. We had a dog that this had been done to before we got her. She humped everything like a male dog. She was soooooo confused. I mean think about it, if it's a female dog you aren't even letting it get it's first menses before you do that. Doesn't make sense to me. After the first heat, by all means. 8 to 12 weeks is WAY too early.
Its not just a sexual behavior for dogs, its also their way of showing dominance over other dogs (and people, my ILs have minpin that gets in MILs face with his privates, but she thinks its funny instead of disrespectful). My female pitbull is spayed, she wasn't spayed til she was 2, and she humps other female dogs.
