When do you start giving babies Cherrios?

    Well, whenever you feel they are comfortable with it. My LO has been nibbling on them at the grocery store or the park for a few months now.

    Really whenever they have a pincer grasp and can pick them up is fine. No teeth required, they just mush them up with their gums.

    No teeth needed for solids.  If you waited for the chewing teeth (i.e. the molars) you'd be waiting until over a year :)  Their gums are great at breaking stuff down.

    I was actually wondering the same thing! So lately I started giving my son, who is 8 months, Gerber puffs. I wasn't sure he was ready, but I noticed that he chews it up. Well, I guess he gums it because he doesn't have any teeth yet, either!

    We started just before 7 mos, but only because I didn't have any on hand earlier. He has no teeth, but eats a ton of finger foods.

    We're doing Cheerios and have been for about a month. Their pincher grasp improved tremendously because of Cheerios. My twins only have 2 teeth.

    We gave them to DD when she was about 7 1/2 months. She had a good pincer grasp and she really loves them.

    The day care director at the first day care I ever worked at said that if the baby can get one in the mouth without help then the baby is ready to eat it.

    So my DS is just over 6 months. I mentioned starting Cheerios or puffs in a few weeks and my MIL freaked out. He doesn't have any teeth yet and she is convinced it's a choking hazard .. so of course she freaked out SO, too. 
    I'm annoyed. Can I convince SO he'll be okay?

    DS has 0 teeth. Cherrios (a) crunch easily with just gums, and (b) dissolve quickly as well. Even if he starts to gag, he'll be able to swallow it down no problem! We started them over the weekend, like I said, and have had no problems. He is having a great time learning to get them in his mouth.

    I agree with you completely! I wanted to start them to get him used to "solid" food and to work on pincer grasp. I'll talk to him about it again tomorrow. His mother drives me nuts.
