Moms who wear suits for work

I have been almost completely MIA lately due to our house selling, wrapping up my last days at work, applying to jobs across the country, packing, paperwork, all that jazz that goes along with a move to the opposite coast.

Good news is, I have been contacted by 5 different companies for interviews and have gotten to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th interviews on 3/5 of them (the other 2 I haven't interviewed with).

Bad news is, none of my pre-preg suits fit anymore. I don't have to wear one on a daily basis where I am now, but in several of the jobs I am up for, the dress is business professional. My in-person interviews start next week when I arrive in CT for good.  Up until now, they have all been phone/skype interviews.

My question for my fellow mom professionals is, do you think it would be possible to let out my suits from a 0/2 to a 4/6?  Or should I just give up on them and buy new ones?

Re: Moms who wear suits for work

  • As a person who has altered suits I would like to say, "Nope." Do yourself and the tailor a solid and buy a new suit. If you had lost weight it might be a slight possibility. Tailoring is pretty serious, there are lots of layers and pieces to a seemingly simple jacket.

It's just the skirts/pants that don't fit. But that's exactly what I was afraid of. Now I'm stuck with a closet full of suits with no bottoms. That's not exactly appropriate lol!

  • I assumed it was the jacket, not the bottoms. In that case it might be possible. It all depends on the seam allowance. It might be possible!

  • Thankfully my work attire is business casual.  Honestly more on the casual side.  I only wear suits if I know I have a meeting with upper upper manangment, or if I have a presentation, or an interview.

I'm not sure about the suits that you have, but is is possible to invest in a just a few pairs of new pants/skirts to match (or coordinate) with the jackets you have.

I'm just thinking that it might be expensive and time consuming to 1) alter all your pants and/or 2) buy a whole new woredrobe.

If you got a few new itmes to get you through the first month or two then you can shop sales to get new stuff a little later.

  • I have a couple suits but rarely wear the top with the bottom, I mix them up because the matchy matchy look is a little dated. As long as you have some work appropriate bottoms that fit, you can coordinate with a suit coat and look polished and professional. Unless your industry is ultra conservative, most people assume you're putting extra effort in to styling yourself rather than just putting on a uniform KWIM? GL with the interviews!
